"Energy Box" Containerised Solution

  • Energy Box is a complete pellet boiler plant room in a 20' (6m) or 40' (12m) shipping container
  • Includes boiler/s, fuel storage with vacuum delivery system, buffer tank/s, pumps, controls and connections to building's systems
  • Pre-fabricated, pre-engineered and pre-commissioned for delivery anywhere in New Zealand
  • Only requires services connections from building — hot and cold water, power & internet
  • Minimal space required — 15m2 for 20' or 30m2 for 40'
  • External shell of container can be clad to blend-in with surroundings or used to promote strong sustainability message of 100% renewable on-site energy

Scope of Use

Provides 100% renewable heat energy in commercial and high end residential buildings for:

  • Central heating
  • Domestic hot water
  • Pool and spa heating
  • Process heat

Available for a range of building sizes and applications — up to 9,000m² in commercial buildings (50W/m2 for underfloor heating) from 512kW system

Provides heating for any central heating distribution system:

  • Ran coil units

Suitable for all climate zones in New Zealand, output will not diminish as outdoor temperatures fall

Limitations on Use
  • Pellet boilers can only be used to burn wood pellets
  • Pellet boilers need to be housed in a weather proof structure
  • Pellet storage vessels can be outdoors if suitably protected from rain and UV exposure

In-Service History

Pelletmatic boilers are produced by OkoFEN.  They have been designing and manufacturing pellet boilers in Austria and Germany since 1990.  As of 2019 over 85,000 OkoFEN pellet boilers have been installed worldwide, with an additional 10,000 manufactured every year.  OkoFEN provide system design and modelling for projects at all scales.

Apricus NZ Eco Energy hold OkoFEN spare parts in New Zealand and there is a network of service agents throughout country for installation, repairs and maintenance.

Energy Box containerised systems are widely used in many countries overseas, for example Argentina, Spain, Chile, Austria, France.

Wood Pellet Fuel

  • 100,00 tonnes of wood pellets (pellets) are made annually in New Zealand from wood waste (sawdust, shavings) in Taupo, Nelson, Invercargill, and Dargaville
  • Pellets provide 100% renewable energy with the lowest carbon intensity of any distributed energy in New Zealand
  • Pellet CO2 emissions of 0.003 kg CO2e/kWh
  • Comparable CO2 emissions (CO2e/kWh) are natural gas at 0.195, diesel at 0.266, electricity at 0.0977
  • Heat pump with average COP of 3 has CO2 emissions of 0.033 kg
  • Average cost of fuel for commercial applications is $0.07 per kWh delivered, excluding GST
  • National distribution network existing for simple, safe, low impact fuel delivery service
  • Blower truck delivery can be completed with a truck up to 20m from plant room / Energy Box
  • No risk of explosion or self-ignition of fuel
  • Pellets do not burn without forced air circulation, in a building fire the bulk fuel store will only smoulder
  • No requirements for containing spillages from environment
  • No noxious emissions from boilers, minimal flue gas emissions, meets Regional Council Air Shed requirements
  • Avoids Global Warming Potential of refrigerants in heat pumps — 650 to 2,100 times more potent than CO2 when released to atmosphere
