H-Clad KiwiTEC Macrocarpa Rusticated Weatherboards
Description

HTL's H-Clad KiwiTEC Macrocarpa Rusticated Weatherboards are a cavity-based horizontal cladding best suited for light commercial and residential buildings. Made from durable and sustainable NZ Macrocarpa, this provides long-lasting exteriors with minimal maintenance and maximum protection against moisture and weather damage. Macrocarpa's warm colour and grain create visually timeless facades.

The H-Clad Rusticated system is a first and second line of defence against water penetration by separating the cladding from the external wall frame with a drained cavity.

The weatherboards are pre-finished with two coats of DRYDEN WoodOil.

H-Clad Rusticated is available in the following profiles options, along with a range of exterior mouldings.

  • HTL67 —  Std Rusticated 110mm Cover

Key Features

Macrocarpa cladding offers architects a sustainable, durable, and versatile solution for both commercial and residential projects. Its natural and environmental benefits, coupled with the advanced design of the HTL cladding system, make it a superior choice for contemporary building needs.

  • Attractive warm orange brown colour, with an even texture and a mix of tight knot and clear dressing grades
  • Breathable and a natural insulator, while absorbing the heat from the sun while maintaining waterproof properties
  • Chemical-free and Naturally Durable Heartwood: Macrocarpa cladding is inherently durable due to the heartwood's natural resistance to decay and pests. It eliminates the need for chemical treatments, providing an environmentally safe and health-conscious building material.
  • Sustainable and Renewable Resource: Macrocarpa is sourced from sustainably managed forests, ensuring a renewable supply. This aligns with sustainable building practices and reduces environmental impact.
  • NZ Grown: Locally grown in New Zealand, Macrocarpa supports reducing the carbon footprint associated with imported materials.
  • Carbon Sequestering: Macrocarpa absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide, aiding in carbon reduction efforts. When used as cladding, this carbon remains sequestered, contributing to long-term environmental benefits.
  • Dual Defence Against Water Penetration: The H-Clad KiwiTEC Rusticated cladding system employs a dual-layer defence by incorporating a minimum 18mm drained cavity between the cladding and the external wall frame. This ensures optimal water drainage and mitigates the risk of water infiltration, preserving the building's structural integrity.
  • Versatile Application for Various Building Types: H-Clad KiwiTEC Rusticated Weatherboards are engineered for both light commercial and residential buildings, providing a versatile and reliable cladding solution suitable for diverse architectural projects.
  • Variety of Finishes: Band Sawn Face (BSF) and Dressed Face (DF): The HTL Rusticated Weatherboard is available in two distinct finishes. The Band Sawn Face (BSF) offers enhanced durability due to its textured surface, while the Dressed Face (DF) provides a smooth, refined appearance, catering to aesthetic and functional preferences.
  • Exceeds 15 year Minimum Durability Requirement: When installed above ground, HTL KiwiTEC Rusticated Weatherboards surpasses the 15 year minimum durability requirement, ensuring long-term performance and reliability.
  • Enhanced Protection with DRYDEN WoodOil: H-Clad products treated with DRYDEN WoodOil benefit from a water-repellent, non-filming, and deeply penetrating timber protector. This treatment maximises the natural resilience of Macrocarpa, maintaining its structural integrity and visual appeal over time.

Scope of Use
  • Cavity fixed

H-Clad KiwiTEC Rusticated Weatherboards are suitable as a horizontal external fixed wall cladding, meet the requirements and limitations of the following:

  • NZBC Acceptable System — E2/AS1, Paragraph 1.1
  • Timber framing compliant with NZS 3604:2011
  • Risk score of 0-20 calculated from NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, Table 2; and,
  • NZS 3604:2011, Sec5.2 Wind Zones, including 'Very High'
  • All materials and processes contained in the NZS 3604:2011 building scope

All HTL H-Clad Weatherboards meet the requirements of the NZ Building Code for Clauses B1 Structure, B2 Durability and E2 Exterior Moisture when installed in accordance with the HTL installation guide.

Limitations on Use

H-Clad KiwiTEC Rusticated must be designed and installed in accordance with the HTL Rusticated Weatherboards Technical Guide for Specifiers and Installers.

H-Clad KiwiTEC is manufactured with care and inspected to ensure quality. However, it is a natural wood product and subject to variations in weight, density, colour, grain and performance. Care must be taken in installation and maintenance to allow for movement.

Storage and Handling

Care must be taken to ensure that timber and accessories are kept clean and dry, and are not damaged whilst in storage awaiting application. Extra care is to be taken while handling timber to ensure that they are not damaged. Timber is to be stacked on flat level bearers that are a maximum of 900mm apart and at least 100mm off the ground.

Timber should either be stored inside an enclosed building or covered and protected from the elements when stored outside

Important: Timber weatherboards should not be installed if their moisture content is outside the range of 14 - 18 %

Coating Requirements

It is not recommended that HTL weatherboards be left uncoated.

HTL recommends that all timber H-clad cladding should be envelope coated before installation, including all cut ends and exposed fresh timber. Avoid coating the top surface only, once installed as this will likely cause movement (cupping) in the timber surface.

HTL do not recommend the use of dark paints or coatings as this may accentuate movement and splitting of the timber, especially if it is exposed to the sun or hot temperatures.  Timber generally requires a coating with a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 40% or greater to minimise the amount of heat build-up in the timber and the resultant thermal movement.  (NB: Black ≈ 5% & White ≈ 95%)

Dryden WoodOil Note:

  • For fire rating — Two coats of Dryden WoodOil coated on 18.5mm Western Red Cedar as Group 3 (NZBC) Test Report 7-599140-CO
  • Light Reflective Values (LRV) — LRV cannot be determined for semi-transparent coatings, as the colour of the timber coated and the number of coats applied impacts measured LRV.

H-Clad is manufactured with care and inspected to ensure quality. However, it is a natural wood product and subject to variations in weight, density, colour, grain and performance. Care must be taken in installation and maintenance to allow for movement.

Statement of Building Code Compliance

If installed, used and fitted as instructed in the HTL Rusticated Weatherboards Technical Guide for Specifiers and Installers, H-Clad KiwiTEC Rusticated Weatherboard will comply with these provisions of the New Zealand Building Code:

  • Section B1—Structure: Performance B1.3.1, B1.3.2 and B1.3.4 for loads arising from selfweight, wind, impact and creep. (i.e. B1.3.3 (a), (h), (j) and (q).
  • Section B2—Durability: Performance B2.3.1 (b) 15 years and B2.3.2.
  • Section E2—External Moisture: Performance E2.3.2.
