Hotel Air Conditioning Solutions
Description

Daikin offers solutions for hotel applications. 

1. Daikin Air Conditioning Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) including VRV Water Cooled solutions, where:

  • The Daikin VRV system is a multi-split type air conditioner (one outdoor unit with multiple indoor units) for commercial buildings that uses variable refrigerant flow control developed by Daikin to provide customers with the ability to maintain individual zone control in each room and floor of a building.
  • Daikin VRV Water Cooled (VRV IV-W) is an individual air conditioning system that utilities water as a heat source. In this unique system, water is piped from a central cooling tower or boiler to the compact VRV IV-W unit (the equivalent of the outdoor unit/condenser in a conventional air conditioning system) and after heat exchange, refrigerant is piped from the VRV IV-W unit to each indoor unit.

VRV indoor units that are generally used:

  • Bulkhead units (ceiling concealed) — compact size to fit in wardrobe space. (Unit depth = 450mm)
  • High Wall (wall mounted) — with optional external expansion valve for quieter operation
  • Ducted Units (ceiling concealed) — complete with inbuilt drain pumps
  • Cassettes (ceiling mounted) — Roundflow cassettes with sensing panel or compact cassettes (600 x 600mm fully flat)

2. Chilled water systems. A chilled water system is a central heat generation / absorption plant that use water as a medium to transfer heat throughout the air conditioning network. It consist of various pressurised pipework, pumps, buffer tanks, valves, fan coil units and customisable controls.

The advantage of these systems over refrigerant based systems is that there are larger selection with more scope for customisation.

Generally VRV systems are used for small to medium buildings while chillers are used in large scale applications.

Chilled water systems can offer a higher efficiency than a VRV system. A Chilled water system does not have limitations on pipework length, this is dependent on the pump selection rather than the chiller. Chilled water systems (if maintained correctly) can last 10-15 years.

3. Fresh air processing for heating, cooling and indoor air quality treatment (modular AHU)

  • AHU (Air handling unit) is a system that pre-condition outdoor air for ventilation purposes as required by the Building code and reduces operational load of air conditioning system.Modular AHU are designed based on the client's requirements.

Hotel pack includes ability to interlock Card key access with air conditioning, scheduling, Central remote controller, Web access for off-site control (optional), Bacnet interface (optional), Energy monitoring (optional), integration with Hotel Management System. Wifi capabilities vary and are individual to each project and application.

VRV Water Cooled include all the key features of conventional VRV and additional:

  • Condensers are unified for heat pump or heat recovery
  • Condensers are to be placed inside the building that allows to adapt to creative building facades
  • Compact condensers size allows for double-stacked installation to minimise spatial requirements
  • 2-stage heat recovery operation improves energy efficiency: first stage within refrigerant system itself, second stage within water loop.
  • Continuous operation for cold climates — heating performance with no defrost
  • Can be used for retrofit retaining the cooling tower and boiler of the old system
  • Significantly reduced refrigerant charge comparing to conventional VRV that, in the most cases, allows to comply with refrigerant concentration standards without any extra mitigation measures

Scope of Use

Scope of Use is dictated by required capacity of air conditioning system and design conditions that should fall into Operation Range of the chosen system:

VRV systems: 

VRV heat pumps (non-simultaneous heating and cooling) come in 2 main series:

  • VRV-S/VRV-S HSE (horizontal discharge, smaller units: 9-24kW Cooling/10-26 kW Heating)
  • VRV H (vertical discharge, bigger units: 16-168 kW Cooling/18-189 kW Heating)

VRV R heat recovery systems (simultaneous heating and cooling) come as vertical discharge units from 16 to 168 kW Cooling/18-189 kW heating.'

Operation range:

  • VRV H and VRV R: Cooling: -5 to 49 CDB Heating: -20 to 15.5 CWB
  • VRV-S HSE: -5 to 52 CDB Heating: -20 to 15.5 CWB
  • VRV-S: -5 to 46 CDB Heating: -20 to 15.5 CWB
  • VRV indoors: Cooling: 20CDB/14CWB to 32 CDB/24CWB Heating: 14 to 24CDB

VRV Water Cooled systems come as modular condensers of 16 kW, 22.4 kW, 28.0 kW & 33.5 kW that may be combined for a maximum capacity of 101kW rated Cooling.

Operation range:

  • Inlet Water temperature 10° to 45°C

Chilled water systems:

Operation range: Design water temperature (adjustable) generally

  • Cooling: 7 LWT / 12 EWT Summer conditions of 35 degrees
  • Heating: 45 LWT, 40 EWT. Generally used as a central A/C system

Air cooled Chillers

  • EWAT: 81kW ~ 701kW
  • EWAQ: 16.8kW – 75.3kW
  • EWAD-TZ: 153kW ~1965kW

Air cooled heat pumps

  • EWYT: 85kW ~ 670kW
  • EWYQ: 16.6kW ~ 74.7kW

Water cooled Chiller

  • EWWD-VZ: 449kW~2074kW

Modular AHUs can be optimised based on clients’ requirements and performance for either chilled water or DX system.

  • Airflow 330 to 25000 L/s
  • Static Pressure up to 2000 Pa
Limitations on Use
  • Varying limits on pipework and connection ratio apply based on systems and its capacities used in the project
  • For corrosive outdoor environments, additional treatment is required such as Blygold. Applications include indoor swimming pools and coastal environments
  • Outdoor units are not recommended to install in enclosed spaces unless required air intake volume and exhaust provided to and from the space
  • VRV Water Cooled systems require fixed inlet water speed
  • Refrigerant concentration compliance with AS/NZS 5149.1 & 5149.3 (R410a only for VRV)
  • Daikin offer an assistance with refrigerant concentration compliance volumes and mitigation methods on project basis
  • Chilled Water: Basement plant room installation may require leak detection systems based on ventilation rates

In-Service History

VRV systems can server 10+ years with a regular maintenance and service plan.

Some of the existing hotels with VRV systems are:

  • Ryman Hamilton — VRV heat recovery systems
  • Ramada New Market — VRV Watercooled systems
  • Hilton Karaka — VRV Heat recovery with refrigerant leak detectors

Chilled water systems with a regular maintenance and service plan can serve:

  • 10-15 years for air cooled chillers
  • 15-30 years for water cooled chillers

Other Performance Attributes
  • Both VRV solutions come with the standard option of VRT smart technology. This technology allows the fluctuation of the refrigerant temperature. This provides better thermal comfort of the supply air temperature provided to the occupants and results in energy savings
  • Blygold Coatings (on request)will prolong the life of the outdoor unit coupled with a maintenance plan.
  • Daikin is able to provide in-house CFD analysis for our VRV and Chilled water systems to ensure plant spaces are accurately designed to accommodate Daikin systems. This analysis will also give an indication if the units will be short cycling, creating inefficiencies in the operation
  • Refrigerant leak detectors can also be provided by Daikin with these VRV/chilled water systems to comply to standard AS/NZS 5149.1 and 5149.3. This solution can be integrated to operate with Daikin's ITM (central controller) to provide a compliant solution to refrigerant detector system
  • In house technical support / sales and commissioning team for chilled water systems

Warranty

  • All of Daikin's VRV systems (vertical discharge) come with a standard 1 year warranty on labour, 3 year warranty on compressor. Options for extended warranty are available, as well as 'Health checks' maintenance plan
  • Chilled water systems warranty is a 1 year warranty from date of commissioning. Extended warranties available — subject to warranty maintenance
  • Modular AHU systems is a 1 year warranty from a date of commissioning
