Improving Passive Fire Protection in Floor Waste Systems: CIFW100 and the 80mm Floor Waste Gully

Passive fire protection plays a critical role in preventing vertical fire spread in multi-storey buildings. One of the most challenging areas to protect is the open floor waste, a necessary drainage component that also creates a potential pathway for fire and smoke between floors.

To address this challenge, Allproof Industries has expanded its passive fire testing to include an 80mm Floor Waste Gully within its Spring-Loaded Cast-In Floor Waste Collar, the CIFW100. The new system has been developed to protect one of the most onerous penetrations commonly found in modern buildings, open floor grates.

The CIFW100 system uses a fast-acting mechanical closure mechanism designed specifically for open floor waste outlets. In the event of a fire, the spring-loaded device rapidly closes the outlet, preventing flames and hot gases from passing through the penetration.

Once the closure mechanism activates, intumescent materials expand under heat, forming a dense insulating char that seals the penetration and maintains the fire barrier. This combined system delivers a minimum 120-minute Fire Resistance Rating (FRR) for both Integrity and Insulation, helping to maintain compartmentation and protect occupants and property.

Designed for modern concrete construction

With post-tensioned and in-situ concrete slabs becoming increasingly common in commercial construction across New Zealand, careful planning of service penetrations is more important than ever.

Traditional post-installation drilling for service penetrations can risk damaging reinforcing steel or post-tensioning cables if not carefully coordinated. Cast-in passive fire collars provide a safer and more controlled alternative.

The CIFW100 is installed during the formwork stage, creating a pre-planned penetration that accommodates both the drainage service and the required passive fire protection. This approach provides several advantages:

  • Eliminates the need for post-construction core drilling
  • Reduces the risk of damaging reinforcing or post-tensioning elements
  • Improves installation efficiency on site
  • Ensures fire protection is integrated into the building structure from the outset

Alongside the CIFW100, Allproof offers a wider range of cast-in passive fire collars, including the CIFCS and CIFCS-L systems, which are designed to protect plumbing and electrical penetrations through fire-rated concrete floors. These systems have been tested at an independent accredited fire laboratory in accordance with AS 1530.4:2014.

A sustainable approach to passive fire manufacturing

Beyond fire performance, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor in product specification. Allproof has embedded environmental responsibility into the development and manufacturing of its passive fire product range.

By maintaining local, in-house manufacturing in New Zealand, the company significantly reduces the environmental impacts associated with offshore production and international shipping. Local manufacturing also supports shorter supply chains and greater quality control.

Many of Allproof’s drainage and passive fire products are manufactured using 100% recycled polypropylene, giving new life to materials collected through local kerbside recycling systems.

The recycling process follows several stages:

  • Collection and sorting:
Recyclable plastics are collected through kerbside recycling systems and sorted to remove non-recyclable materials.
  • Material separation:
Polypropylene plastics are separated by material type and prepared for processing.
  • Cleaning and shredding:
The plastics are washed, chipped, and prepared for reprocessing.
  • Pelletising:
The material is fed through extrusion machinery, producing uniform plastic pellets. Colouring is also introduced during this stage.
  • Injection moulding:
The recycled polypropylene pellets are supplied to Allproof’s manufacturing facility, where they are used in injection moulding machines to produce new drainage and passive fire components.

This closed-loop recycling approach allows everyday waste materials to be transformed into high-performance building products, reducing landfill and supporting a more circular construction economy.

Allproof’s main production facility is covered by the Toitū enviromark bronze certification and harnesses clean energy generated onsite by 450 solar panels installed on the roof. This solar panel installation prevents 50 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere every year.

Obtaining certification through a well-established and highly respected independent organisation such as Toitū adds authenticity to Allproof’s sustainability commitments. This certification now gives specifiers and users of Allproof products even more confidence that the company understands and values sustainable business practices.

Supporting Architects and Contractors

As passive fire compliance requirements continue to evolve, early engagement with technical specialists can help ensure that penetration protection systems are correctly specified and installed.

For projects requiring compliant fire-rated penetrations through concrete floors, particularly those involving floor waste systems, the CIFW100 offers a tested, integrated solution that combines fire safety, construction efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Allproof provides support through its architectural and passive fire technical team, assisting designers, engineers, and contractors with system selection, detailing, and site-specific installation guidance.
