A Sustainable Drainage Channel Choice for Kings Plant Barn Stonefields

Considered one of the country's most innovative and sustainable projects in its category, the recently built Kings Plant Barn in Stonefields, Auckland has looked to connect people and plants with a focus on sustainability.

Energy is generated on site from solar panels with water collected, filtered and reused from their irrigation system. The building itself has been built with sustainable products such as a timber frame as well as products made from recycled materials (such as the playground).

Allproof’s 200mm clear opening Commercial Channel has been installed throughout the garden centre to capture and remove surface water. The Commercial Channel is made in New Zealand from 100% recycled material predominantly collected from single use post-consumer streams.

Regular watering within a garden centre places increased importance on designing and installing an effective surface water drainage solution. Organic debris is often washed onto the floor and into the channel drain. Product selection needs to consider the ability to remove hazards as customers regularly walk across the drainage channel, any chemicals the system could be exposed to, and ongoing maintenance.

The Heelproof Cast Iron (HCI) grate was selected, this grate has a class D (AS3996) load rating allowing for heavy duty equipment to travel over the system, such as large trolleys and forklifts. The grate also removes hazards from pedestrians as the openings resist heels as well as being P5 slip resistance rated (AS4586). The slip resistance features reduce risk to staff and customers in wet conditions, especially young children who will be present as Kings plant Barn has a playground.

Grates are 500mm in length and secured with lockdowns at the centre. This allows for the easy removal and maintenance while stopping movement or unauthorised access.

The Channels are made at Allproof’s main production facility on the North Shore of Auckland which generates its own energy on site through 450 solar panels installed on the roof. The production facility has been given a Toitū enviromark bronze certification providing confidence that Allproof understands and values sustainable business practices.

The Allproof CC200 commercial linear channel drain is a medium duty high-capacity solution for external stormwater and surface water drainage. It has been designed for installation in concrete, pavers or epoxy finished floors. The trench drain gains its strength from the surrounding concrete, the 100% recycled polypropene creates an easy to handle and install system. The grates include black plastic, heelproof cast iron and 316 stainless steel wedge wire.
This system is ideal for urban pedestrianised areas, all the grates are heelproof and the 316 SS wedge wire has an R11 slip resistance rating. These features also make it an excellent option for educational facilities.
The cast iron grate is load class rated up to a classification of D allowing this versatile strip drain to also be used in loading bays, car parks and other commercial applications requiring a durable drainage solution.

NZBC E1 Surface Water:

E1.1/E1.2: Allproof Surface water drainage systems have been designed to safeguard people from injury or illness, and other property from damage caused by surface water.
E1.3.1/E1.3.2: When correctly selected for the scenario and installed in line with Allproof literature these systems will protect property from surface water in an event having a 10% probability of occurring annually or entering a property in an event having a 2% probability of occurring annually.
E1.3.3: When selected and installed correctly Allproof surface water systems with convey water to an appropriate outfall using gravity, avoid the likelihood of blockages, provide access for maintenance and clearing blockages, and avoid the likelihood of damage from superimposed loads or normal ground movements.

B2/AS1 Durability:

B2.3.1: Allproof surface water drainage systems meet the requirements of B2.3.1 (b) not less than 15 years and (c) not less than 5 years.

AS 3996 Access covers and grates:

Allproof surface water drainage systems have been designed to comply to the specifications and testing set out in AS 3996. By complying to this standard Allproof products are made to improve the performance of trafficable covers and grates in vehicular and pedestrian areas, thus reducing risk of injury or loss through damage.
