Viking Roofspec and Coastal Environments: The Perfect Match

The furthest distance from NZ’s coastline is only a 2.5-hour drive, highlighting the narrowness of our islands which get perpetually pelted with salt spray and the roaring forties winds. Viking Roofspec feel they have a duty of care to take NZBC clause B2 (Durability) just as seriously as they do E2 (External Moisture), by supplying materials that last comfortably past their warranty periods.

Despite metal roof coatings having improved with corrosion resistance, there’s something to be said, especially when building on the coast, for eliminating metal altogether. There’s no going past a Viking Enviroclad membrane roof, either on a plywood substrate, or better still as part of a thermally efficient Viking Warm roof. Furthermore, specifying one of Viking’s earthy-coloured Enviroclad membranes will ensure a tasteful and responsible blending with the surrounding environment.

Additionally, the installation of matching coloured TPO weldable ribs will break up the roof plane to enhance the design. These ribs don’t penetrate the membrane but simply weld to its surface. They can be spaced as close or as far apart as you wish. They don’t even need to be parallel. You can create a spoke wheel design if desired. Your roof is a blank canvas.

While on the subject of weldable ribs, solar panels (a Godsend in remote parts of the country) can be mounted on specialised TPO wrapped aluminium bars (named EJOT bars) without penetrating the Enviroclad membrane.

If your preference is for a steeper pitched roof, Viking’s CertainTeed asphalt shingles or Ecostar tiles; the latter made with recycled plastics come with warranties up to 50 years. Installed on a timber-sarked substrate, these stunning looking roofs brace the whole building and won’t suffer from rust.

on pedestrian decks and balconies; and,
scope limitations of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, paragraph 1.1; and,
with timber supporting structures designed and constructed in accordance with the NZBC; and,
with substrates of plywood sheet and compressed fibre cement sheet.

Viking Dec-K-ing PVC Waterproofing Membrane has also been appraised for use as a waterproofing membrane for external reinforced concrete pedestrian decks and balconies for buildings within the following scope:

up to 3 storeys with a maximum height from ground to eaves of 10m and with a floor plan area limited only by seismic and structural control joints; and,
with the reinforced concrete structure designed and constructed in accordance with the NZBC.

This appraisal is limited to pedestrian decks and balconies within the following scope:

constructed to suitable falls (refer paragraphs 12.1 - 12.9 of the Viking Dec-K-ing BRANZ Appraisal); and,
with no steps within the deck level, no integral roof gardens and no down pipe discharging directly onto the deck.

The design and construction of the substrate and movement and control joints are specific to each building, and are therefore the responsibility of the building designer and building contractor, and are outside the scope of this appraisal.
