Making Viking Roofspec Membrane Roofs ‘Solar Ready’

There have been some recent incentives to assist building owners with installing solar eg: IRD offers 20% tax deductibility for commercial businesses to install solar, while some banks provide interest-free loans and some councils provide attractive loan schemes that allow retrofits to be paid in small instalments through rates.

If you combine the above-mentioned initiatives with an increase in competition between solar panel system providers resulting in lower costs, solar’s return on investment is rapidly improving. Accordingly, New Zealand's solar industry has experienced record-breaking growth, passing the 1-gigawatt milestone for local distributed solar capacity in mid-2026 following a 66% leap in generation during 2025.

‘Solar Ready’ Membrane Roofs

For many specifiers, the thought of penetrating a membrane roof to attach a solar panel system is understandably frightening. However, it no longer needs to be with Viking Roofspec’s “solar ready” programme. Viking provides proven, fully-warranted, watertight, solar mount systems for installing on Viking Torch-On and Enviroclad TPO membrane roofs.

Viking RoofTrak

The Viking RoofTrak system uses specialised, ‘Integrated Fixing Point’ (IFP) technology, rendering a secure, heavy-duty structural connection through the membrane layer without compromising watertightness. There are three vital components to the RoofTrak system:

  • (i) a low-profile steel plate through which mechanical fasteners anchor the system to the roof;
  • (ii) a raised, watertight central anchor point with threaded receptors for M10 bolts to connect solar panel rails to and
  • (iii) a membrane flange to cover the plate and mechanical fasteners which is heat-welded (TPO), or torched (torch-on) to the roof membrane to form a complete seal.

Viking EJOT Mount Bars

These are aluminium box-section lengths encased in TPO roofing membrane with weldable flanges, creating a non-penetrative fixing base that welds onto an Enviroclad membrane roof. Like the RoofTrak which is specific about the specification of fastener to connect solar panels to it, the EJOT mount bar specifies a JF3, 25mm bi-metal self-drilling fasteners to maximise the purchase into the aluminium box section.

The above systems have demonstrated excellent history-in-use without failure or leakage in the NZ and Pacific Islands over the last few years.
