Think Below the Slab: Viking's New Tanking Membrane

Developed by world-class manufacturer General Membrane, Viking FleeceTank is a new addition to Viking Roofspec’s tanking systems portfolio. It is a unique membrane solution for below-ground application; specifically as an underslab membrane to form a key waterproofing component of the building envelope.

Viking FleeceTank comprises of a modified bitumen sheet with a factory-applied fleece on its top side. This fleece provides a bonding catalyst to enhance the key with concrete poured on top of it.

This membrane is simply laid on the site blinding and dressed into the footings; fleece side-up, with the naked bitumen underside torching beautifully to Viking’s other tanking membrane used on the walls — Viking Mercury FC, to complete the building envelope.

Testing has shown Viking FleeceTank’s bond to concrete to be over five times that of traditional modified bitumen underslab membranes with mineral chip surfaces (the bond of which is still acceptable).

Compared to the material only costs of other specialised tanking systems such as bentonite and thermoplastic underslab systems, Viking FleeceTank system is very cost-effective sitting at a minimum of -25% below these.

Construction materials are only as effective as their installation. When it comes to waterproofing below the ground, you only have one shot at getting it right before concrete is poured on top and trenches around the perimeter are backfilled. Viking Roofspec has an ‘Approved Applicator’ network which is not just a fancy term for contractors who have a trading account. This skilled network comprises of hand-picked, trained, experienced installers who understand the concept that there’s no such thing as ‘almost waterproof’ and they show this by installing Viking’s materials to the exact specification; the way the manufacturer intended for them to be installed.

Viking FleeceTank is a specialised damp-proofing and tanking system that protects the below-ground portion of a building structure from water ingress.

Pre-Consumer Recycled Content

Viking FeeceTank is used for waterproofing under the slab and for foundation walls, fixing the membrane on a retaining wall or on formworks, before casting the concrete.

Other forms of tanking where FleeceTank can be used include: under footings, floor slabs or in situ or precast concrete;

On buildings subject to non-specific design under floor slabs complying with NZS 3604 and behind concrete masonry basement walls and under floor slabs complying with NZS 4229; and,

On buildings subject to specific design with substrates of in-situ or precast concrete complying with NZS 3101.
Where subsoil drainage and free draining granular backfill has been placed behind basement walls

Viking FleeceTank must be adequately protected during the placement of re-bar.

Other forms of tanking where Mercury FC can be used include under floor slabs, behind masonry walls, the lining of substrates of in situ or precast concrete; retaining walls, cellars, lift shafts, tunnels, plaza decks, roof gardens and planter boxes.

Viking Mercury FC DPM Membrane has been appraised as a DPM for use:

On buildings subject to non-specific design under floor slabs complying with NZS 3604 and behind concrete masonry basement walls and under floor slabs complying with NZS 4229; and,
On buildings subject to specific design with substrates of in-situ or precast concrete complying with NZS 3101 or concrete masonry complying with NZS 4230; and,
Where subsoil drainage and free draining granular backfill has been placed behind basement walls

Viking Mercury FC DPM Membrane must be adequately protected against damage during backfilling and in service.
