New Zealand’s coastal and high-wind environments present unique challenges for architects and designers. Salt-laden air, high humidity, and strong UV exposure can quickly degrade conventional building materials. That’s why ColorCote developed MagnaFlow — a roofing and cladding solution engineered to perform in exposed coastal zones.
With over 60 years of experience supplying pre-painted steel and aluminium products to the New Zealand market, ColorCote has built a legacy of innovation and trust. MagnaFlow is a key part of that legacy, designed specifically for buildings located within 100 metres of the coastline, where corrosion resistance is critical. And while people often talk about “coloured steel,” the truth is, there’s no such thing as coloured steel. It’s all colour coated. That’s what makes it better. The protective coating is what gives ColorCote products their long-lasting performance, vibrant finish, and resilience in New Zealand’s toughest environments — it’s steel and aluminium roofing made better.
ColorCote was also the first to introduce magnesium-enhanced steel roofing to the New Zealand market, originally launching the product under the name ZM8 around 2009 before evolving into what is now known as MagnaFlow. With over 16 years of proven performance, MagnaFlow continues to set the benchmark for corrosion resistance in coastal applications — a legacy that newer products are only beginning to follow.
A recent example of MagnaFlow in action is the Christchurch Yacht Club reroof. Located within 100 metres of the coastline, the historical building required a solution that could confidently withstand the marine environment. MagnaFlow in the colour Pioneer Red was selected for its proven corrosion resistance and aesthetic flexibility, helping preserve the club’s heritage while ensuring long-term performance. The project was a community initiative spearheaded by Graham Hill Roofing, in collaboration with numerous sponsors. Alongside ColorCote, one of those key contributors was Roofing Industries, who roll-formed ColorCote's coil into the classic kiwi, corrugate profile. It’s a clear demonstration of ColorCote's commitment to making better happen in our communities, and how ColorCote products integrate seamlessly into real-world applications.
For environments with chemically aggressive conditions, such as geothermal zones, dairy factories, or industrial sites, MagnaFlow PLUS offers enhanced protection. To ensure the right product is used for the right environment, ColorCote provides site-specific warranties, which must be obtained prior to installation. The team works closely with architects to guide product selection and ensure every project is matched with the appropriate solution.
MagnaFlow is also available in the largest colour range in the market, giving designers the freedom to match or contrast with other architectural elements. And for inland or moderate environments, ColorCote offers ZinaCore, a cost-effective option with reliable performance, while AlumiGard is recommended for extreme marine environments, right up to the waterline, as well as chemical or acidic exposure in harsh industrial or geothermal areas.
From calm coastal zones to more exposed, severe locations, ColorCote MagnaFlow continues to support New Zealand architecture with products that are built to endure — backed by decades of experience and a commitment to quality — Steel Made Better.
