An Unused Shed Becomes a Resourceful Outdoor Powder Room

Outdoor living is a big part of New Zealand summer; where coming together with family and friends for a barbecue and splash in the pool is one of life's simple pleasures. This is the ideal summer for Alex Breingan and his family. Their outdoor area is a homeowner's dream, featuring a large swimming pool, hot tub and shaded alfresco area, however, there is one particular nuisance — wet and muddy feet in the house after a day of pool lounging.

Their journey was captured on the popular New Zealand TV show: 100 days of renovation.

"We love entertaining our family and friends in the summertime; the kids love to swim in the pool all day, however, we don’t enjoy cleaning the mess of wet towels and muddy footprints all over the house," says Alex.

Alex had the idea to convert the old garden shed at the back of the house into a powder and changing room. When he was advised that the excavation and installation of drainage would cost over $20,000, his vision for the outdoor space was compromised — that is until he sought a second opinion from his plumber.

"My plumber had advised that Saniflo offered a cost-effective solution, which did not require any excavation," says Alex. "I was thrilled to hear that the changing and powder room was back on the agenda and achievable at a fraction of the cost."

The Saniaccess 2 was installed behind the wall studs, for a sleek finish and to maximise the space. The pump connects a toilet and vanity basin, which pushes the waste out to a 20mm pipe that runs along the outside fence and connects to the main sewerage. The pump is the ideal solution for the space as it is compact, quiet and enables the convenient maintenance of the unit without having to disassemble the device or empty the tank.

“Without Saniflo, we were not able to achieve the outdoor changing and powder room as it would have been too expensive," says Alex "The space was used all summer long and kept the dirt outside the house!"

Key benefits:

  • Macerator pump with the possibility to connect a toilet and vanity basin.
  • Provides easy access to the blades and electrical chamber for servicing.
  • Pumps up to 5m vertically, 100m horizontally, or lesser combinations of both
