When Icon Construction set out to deliver Auckland’s 43-storey Indigo Hotel, one priority was crystal-clear: every escape route had to work just as hard as the building’s luxury fit-out. Moddex's role was to engineer four internal fire-egress stairwells and rooftop access that would meet New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) fire-safety clauses C1–C6, while streamlining installation on a tight CBD site.

Using pre-engineered Ezibilt stair kits and Tuffrail TR25/TR30 handrails, Moddex supplied fully non-combustible, hot-dip-galvanised steel systems that arrive as kitsets, craned 43 storeys up and bolted together — no on-site welding, no coating breaches, and no extra fire risk. Each design was backed by a third-party PS1 producer statement and integrated into the project BIM model, giving the design team a clear compliance pathway from specification through final sign-off.

Because Ezibilt is modular, installers could fine-tune stair widths and bracket positions in response to mechanical services clashes, yet still preserve the minimum 600mm egress clearances in compliance with NZ1647. The result: protected escape routes that resist both flame spread and corrosion, ready for handing over to hotel management without a single return visit.
