Moddex has transitioned to locally sourced lower-carbon aluminium supplied by Capral; part of an intentional move to cut embodied carbon in access systems specified across commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects. Capral’s LocAl Green aluminium carries a carbon intensity of ~8 kg CO₂e/kg Al, with LocAl Super Green at ~4 kg CO₂e/kg Al, placing them among the lowest-carbon options available globally. This change supports designers aiming to meet MBIE’s low-carbon objectives while maintaining durability, corrosion resistance and performance.
What this means for WOL carbon accounting (EN 15804 / EN 15978):
- Modules A1–A3 (raw material + manufacturing): Supplier-verified carbon intensity figures for LocAl provide credible inputs for LCA models and Green Star reporting.
- Module A4 (transport to site): Local sourcing supports reduced transport emissions relative to long-haul imports, aligning with MBIE’s Whole-of-Life Embodied Carbon framework.
- Module D (end-of-life benefits): Aluminium’s high recyclability can be reflected as beyond-system benefits in LCA, consistent with MBIE guidance on embodied carbon assessment.
“By embracing Capral’s LocAl, we are just innovating another way, making it easier for architects and engineers to achieve a compliant, durable, robust and flexible solution for the project, which also ticks the boxes on sustainability and responsible procurement.” - Joe Rowland, Director, Moddex
Assurance and responsible sourcing:
Capral holds Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard v3 and Chain of Custody v2 certification, enabling traceability claims from mine to extrusion and supporting responsible-procurement specifications.
Designers can leverage this in briefs that target MBIE’s five focus areas — notably reducing whole-of-life embodied carbon, accelerating low-carbon materials adoption, and laying foundations for future emissions reductions through transparent, third-party-supported data.
