Custom-Made Commercial Cladding Solution

Sometimes product solutions for commercial buildings are born out of the need to improve on the original product specified. For this multi-unit housing development, the custom-made aluminium deck pergolas were definitely one such improvement on that originally specified.

Clever design meant the cladding was incorporated into the pergola, serving two purposes — first as a design feature defining individual units from neighbouring units and secondly as overhead and side privacy screens for individual homes. Originally specified by the designer in a wood finish, the developer instead insisted on an aluminium finish for greater longevity and less ongoing maintenance (no need for regular painting).

These pergolas also had to function as a safety barrier (balustrade) on first-floor decks, so needed to be NZBC compliant and signed off by engineers as conforming to relevant balustrade regulations. Drawing on the experience and skills of HomePlus Exteriors (SE Auckland), the developer was able to work with them to create these aluminium pergolas as an extension of the Viking baluster balustrading and fencing they were already installing.

Pergola screens were manufactured using Edge balustrade fixings and 150 x 50mm rectangular slats, fitted in 10-row formations to form bridge structures over decks, which were then powder coated in either a Pioneer Red colour to match the joinery or Grey Friars as a design feature.
