Bathrooms and laundries place greater demands on interior cabinetry than dry living spaces. Humidity, occasional splashes, cleaning and changing moisture levels mean the decorative surface, substrate and edge detailing should be considered together.
Choosing the right decorative panel
Compac Panels offers a selection of decorative panel ranges suited to bathroom and laundry cabinetry, including Acrylic, SatinWood and PanelLam. These surfaces can be pressed onto moisture-resistant MDF to create practical solutions for vanities, storage units, cupboard fronts and other interior joinery.
- Acrylic provides gloss and matt finishes for clean, contemporary cabinetry.
- SatinWood offers a soft-matte woodgrain surface that is easy to clean and resistant to fingerprints.
- PanelLam uses a high-pressure laminate surface, providing a durable option for frequently used interior surfaces.
Moisture resistance and correct specification
Compac Panels uses high-performance GoldenEdge HMR-0 moisture-resistant MDF as the substrate for these decorative panel ranges. GoldenEdge HMR-0 is specifically designed for applications in areas with high relative humidity. Its low-swelling characteristics provide good dimensional stability as environmental humidity changes. Rigorous wet cyclic testing shows GoldenEdge HMR-0 has a less than 5% thickness swell for 18mm board after 24 hours.
Correct specification and fabrication remain essential for cabinetry installed in spaces exposed to humidity or occasional splashes. Designers and manufacturers should:
- Specify moisture-resistant MDF rather than standard MDF
- Use compatible edging and fully seal cut edges and penetrations
- Design cabinetry to minimise areas where water can pool or remain in contact with panel edges and joints
- Provide appropriate room ventilation
- Follow relevant fabrication, installation and care instructions
Moisture resistance should not be confused with waterproofing. These panels are intended for interior cabinetry and decorative surfaces. They are not a substitute for a waterproofing membrane or compliant wet-area wall lining in areas exposed directly to water.
Manufactured in New Zealand, Compac Panels’ decorative ranges give architects, designers and joiners coordinated finishes, substrate options and matching edging for durable residential and commercial interiors.
