Consistent and agreed standards are essential to facilitate data interoperability. Metadata standards for assets, as an example, establish a common language for asset data to support the planning, design, construction and ongoing management of assets. Critically, asset metadata standards provide a data specification to support evidence-based investment decisions.
During the recent build of a new gymnasium at the RNZAF Whenuapai base, NZDF applied BIM processes to the building design and construction, and utilised metadata standards to inform the BIM data capture on the project. The use of data standards ensured the quick and easy extraction of common data from the BIM model to agnostic platforms like Excel.
Defining metadata standards proved challenging work however. The project team had to undertake a search of international precedents and develop a metadata survey tool to hone information requirements. In particular, the process for narrowing down the information to be collected for certain objects took a significant amount of effort.
A key learning from the project was the importance of defining how much data is enough. The project highlighted that it is essential to take a pragmatic approach to understanding what the organisation is trying to achieve, and what that means for the type and amount of information that needs to be captured.
Getting the level of information in the model wrong makes for an unwieldy model and onerous data handling requirements. On the other hand, using metadata standards appropriately, for a BIM model done right, makes for effortless information sharing.
