Avoid Landfills with Viking's Membrane Overlays

With the rapid development of sustainable building in New Zealand, Viking Roofspec has identified the importance of offering a range of sustainable roofing solutions that reduce the impact on the environment and where applicable, assist with a building’s Green Star Rating.

It is disturbing to note that construction and demolition waste makes up half of New Zealand’s total waste going to landfill. As a member of the Green Building Council, Viking Roofspec is constantly learning and adapting new ways to develop sustainable roofing solutions to minimise the unnecessary dumping of materials — membrane overlay being the most effective solution.

Over 90% of Viking roofing materials can be used as an overlay option, allowing old roofs to remain in place*; this minimises noise, dust, traffic pollution, and overall unnecessary waste in landfills.

Viking’s WarmRoof system is the most sustainable of Viking’s overlay options. Viking’s Warm roof consists of rigid polyiso insulation panels with a waterproofing membrane system installed on top; the whole system being on top of the roof (ie: on the outside of the building).

A Viking WarmRoof is a practical solution for overlaying an existing low-slope roof with weather-tightness or UV resistance issues. Virtually any existing roofing material, including metal, can be overlaid. The benefit for building owners is the existing roof does not need to be removed; avoiding the expense and waste of shrink-wrap, if applicable (which will then also end up in landfill), and the environmental cost of disposing of potential ‘nasties’ in New Zealand’s landfills.

What’s more, the energy efficiency of polyiso rigid panel is unmatched by other insulation types which saves electricity.

It is essential to Viking that their systems have minimal environmental impact. Whether it’s supplying materials cut-to-length to minimise waste, 100% recyclable products, or multiple overlay options, Viking are dedicated to finding solutions that reduce the amount of construction and industrial waste going to landfill.

*A proviso worth noting, is that neither Viking or any of the approved applicator companies it supplies materials to, will overlay its materials on an existing roof that is not structurally sound. Installing onto old roofs that are beyond repair is irresponsible. Thorough inspections are vital to ensure the integrity of the existing substrate before overlaying.
