Ockham’s latest twin developments, Toi and Whetū, preserve the heritage and design of an established suburb while providing for the future with intelligent designs and floor plans.

Developed to add a large volume of smart, convenient living to a growing suburb where space is at a premium, the seven-storey Toi comprises 65 apartments, while the 10-storey Whetū provides 77 apartments.

Early engagement creates alignment between design intent, fabrication and on-site delivery

Rather than simply supplying products, Spectrum collaborated with the architects during the design phase to refine details, colour selections and installation methodology to suit both the design vision and the realities of construction.

Ockham Project Manager Hannah Majurey said Spectrum’s flexibility throughout the process made them a strong fit for the project.

“This was the first time we [Ockham] worked with Spectrum. It went well throughout the design process as well as construction and delivery ... and they have a great design.”

Spectrum installed multiple systems to both Toi and Whetū — Seamless decking balustrades and privacy screens, Settler stair balustrades, Manhattan Post & Handrail and custom landscape screening.

Spectrum’s Seamless systems were widely used for their modern, post-less design that matches looks with durability and structural strength. Settler stair balustrade and Manhattan Post & Handrail systems were chosen for their performance in high-traffic areas but also needed to contribute to the overall character of the buildings.

Being able to powder coat products to match the project’s distinctive brick palette helped ensure the balustrades and screens complemented other materials and textures in the development.

Spectrum Managing Director Jonathan Bent said maintaining aesthetics was only part of the challenge.

“More developments are putting community and connectedness at the centre of their builds. Our products need to enhance the overall setting as well as be built for lasting performance. Minimising upkeep is also so important in this regard.”

Majurey said longevity was embedded into the design process from the beginning.

“We build our apartments to last years and years, so we use products that will last and still look beautiful in years to come. And that includes the balustrades from Spectrum.”

For Spectrum, projects like Toi and Whetū demonstrate the value of involving suppliers early — helping architects preserve design intent while giving builders confidence the systems will perform efficiently and reliably on-site.
