CodeMark Certified 1-Degree Falls for Te Manawa – Westgate Library and Multi-Purpose Facility

Specifically designed for low pitch roofs, this CodeMark certified Warm Roof System complies with the new H1 standards, and has been specified on a multitude of projects with an extensive in-service history of use throughout New Zealand.

Te Manawa – Westgate Library and Multi-Purpose Facility by Warren and Mahoney Architects was a great example of how Nuralite's low-pitched roofing system can enable designers to maximise internal stud height and interior space, while minimising the overall building height.

Situated in Westgate, Te Manawa was created to be the community hub and heart of this new commercial destination. Heralded as a space for visitors to explore, learn and play, the brief was to create an innovative functional living space that could be multi-purpose, rather than a more traditional library.

With three levels and a double height atrium, the architects wanted Te Manawa to capture natural light and see the project become a benchmark in terms of its design features and use.

Aiming to implement as many sustainable techniques as possible, the building combined passive low energy design elements, such as external shading devices and overhangs to naturally shade building facades. Alongside a Nuratherm Tapered Warm Roof using 70mm PIR, there was a Nuraply 3PG green roof and PV solar panel array that served as a shaded reading terrace.

The Nuratherm Tapered Warm Roof provides continuous insulation ‘outside the structure’ and allows maximum thermal performance with minimal increases to roof height and additional weights — often found in bulky and slow curing, cementitious screeds.

With the assistance of Nuralite's in-house drawing program software, the team were able to set out the tapered insulation to provide the correct falls to the outlets in the most economical set out pattern whilst maintaining the designer’s insulation performance requirements.

The project also had Nuralite's Nuraply 3PT/3PTM Tanking system, which assisted with the building sitting in a two metre water table.

Te Manawa has been awarded a 5 Green Star – Green Star Custom Design Certified Rating, representing New Zealand excellence.

The Nuratherm system puts the insulation where it should be, above the substrate, to completely enclose the roof area with a highly efficient insulation blanket.

The Nuraply Nuratherm System has been appraised by BRANZ for use as an insulating roof on buildings within the following scope:

the scope limitations of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, Paragraph 1.1 with regards to building height and maximum floor plan areas; and,
on limited access flat roofs with concrete, timber or steel structural decks subject to specific structural design; and,
with roofs constructed to drain water to gutters and drainage outlets complying with the NZBC; and,
with roofs constructed to suitable falls (Refer Paragraph 15.3 and 15.4); and,
with no integral roof gardens; and,
situated in NZ3 3604 Wind Zones, up to, and including 'Extra High'.

The Nuraply Nuratherm System has also been appraised for durability and thermal performance as an insulated roofing system on buildings that are the subject of specific design with no building height restriction. Building designers are responsible for the building design and for the incorporation of the Nuraply Nuratherm System into their design in accordance with the declared properties and instructions of Nuralite Waterproofing Ltd.

Extra High Wind Zone

In the opinion of BRANZ , the Nuraply Nuratherm System, if designed, and used, installed and maintained in accordance with with the statements and conditions of Appraisal No.732 (2012), will meet the following provisions of the NZBC:

Clause B2 Durability: Performance B2.3.1(b), 15 years. Nuraply Nuratherm System meet this requirement
Clause E2 External Moisture: Performance E2.3.1 and 2.3.2. Nuraply Nuratherm System meet these requirements
Clause F2 Hazardous Building Materials: Performance F2.3.1. Nuraply Nuratherm System meet this requirement and will not present a hazard to people
Clause H1 Energy Efficiency: Performance H1.3.1(a). The Nuraply Nuratherm System will contribute to meeting this requirement

Nuraply Nuratherm System is appraised as an Alternative Solution in terms of New Zealand Building Code compliance.

Nuraply 3PT(M)systems have been developed for positive long-term, low maintenance waterproofing of construction features such as:

Nuraply 3PT(M) provides a robust watertight solution for areas where water is likely. The system can tolerate some hydrostatic pressure but specific design is required for areas of high hydrostatic pressure such as large building sites by the sea.

Based on expert opinion, verified by Auckland Council, Nuraply 3PT and 3PTM will meet the following provisions of the NZBC:

Clause B2 Durability: Performance B2.3.1(a), not less than 50 years performance expectancy.
Clause E2 External Moisture: Performance E2.3.3, roofs and walls shall prevent the penetration of water.
Clause F2 Hazardous Building Materials: Performance F2.3.1. Does not pose a hazard to humans.
