Create Space for Retirement with Cavity Sliders

CS for Doors recently worked with Milford couple Patty and Dave Wilson who were planning to build a home for their retirement.  The couple wanted to ensure that as they aged, their house remained accessible and practical, so chose to install space saving cavity sliders throughout.

The original plans were modified to widen the hallway to 1.2m and enlarge the doorways from 710mm to 860mm wide.  This meant that in the event of one of them needing to use a wheelchair or walker in the future, access throughout the home would not be compromised.  Mindful of how difficult it can be to manoeuvre around an inwards-swinging door when mobility is limited – especially when carrying items about the home – the Wilsons installed cavity sliders to the hallway and storage areas to ensure these areas remained open and unencumbered.

A CS SpaceMaker cavity slider sections off the walk-in shower and en suite from the master bedroom, and allowance has been made for future fixing of grab rails to the cavity walls.

The CL400 range was chosen for door hardware throughout.  The comfortable finger pulls, generously sized side pulls and smooth privacy latches make opening, closing and locking the doors effortless and the gentle magnetic latches hold the doors closed eliminating drafts.  Planning ahead, the Wilsons have made the doors sufficiently wide to allow lever handles to be added at a later date if dexterity diminishes.

Other changes to the plans included incorporating a CS Raking Head cavity slider into the laundry area.  This door quietly self-closes to ensure the area remains closed off when not in use and the CS SofStop prevents the door from slamming – or jamming grandchildren’s fingers.

An automated cavity slider was used for the internal access garage, removing the hassle of opening and closing doors when carrying shopping bags from the car to the kitchen.  The unit was fitted with an overhead sensor and the opening cycle adjusted to allow sufficient time to get through the door when carrying items.  The automation also ensures the door is always closed which makes home heating more efficient.

The Wilsons are thrilled to be moving in to their dream home and confident that they have designed a space that will suit them and their extended family for years to come.
