This residential project needed a flexible solution to provide movable sun shading that could meet the harsh environmental conditions of the coastal location. Kaynemaile’s custom solution using RE/8 mesh created an interior/exterior threshold for this award-winning home, giving weather protection without sacrificing the view.

Accelerated weathering testing

As part of Kaynemaile’s market expansion into the USA, the company needed to meet the stringent Florida building code requirements. Accelerated weather testing carried out at BRANZ laboratories proved Kaynemaile’s RE/8 material met the tough requirements for tensile strength after exposure.

These tests for a region with extreme weather conditions such as Florida have set the benchmark for approved plastics for exterior exposure around the world and provide further confidence for Kaynemaile’s New Zealand and Australian market.

2000-year-old technology reinvented

Kaynemaile was founded in New Zealand in 2002 with the goal to reimagine 2000-year-old chainmail material and transpose the benefits into architecture and design.

The key to unlocking this chainmail material was to invent a seamless injection moulding process capable of forming and assembling rings using polycarbonate while in a liquid-state, allowing it to form without any joins in the material.

In 2004, Kaynemaile formed a strategic partnership with the leading manufacturer of high-tech polymer materials and carefully tested and selected the best polycarbonate available to meet the rigorous requirements of the construction market.

Polycarbonate is well proven with over 70 years of usage in high stress, high temperature applications such as aeronautics and construction, so, while Kaynemaile’s material may appear new on the surface, it benefits from historical knowledge in the structure, material science, and processing technologies.
