Unex Balustrades at Matavai Resort, Niue

The Scenic Matavai Resort, Niue is a secluded tourist resort located on a remote paradise-island in the heart of the South Pacific. Nestled on a cliff-top with breath-taking ocean views, amongst tropical flora and fauna, the ambience is simply surreal.

Several New Zealand companies including Jasmax Architects, Opus Consultants and Arrow International were tasked with an extensive refurbishment of the resort, including the construction of a new guest room building. Unex Systems was approached regarding the design of the balustrades. The scope incorporated:

Engineering for crowd loadings to meet stringent safety standards,
Engineering for cyclone wind pressures,
Aesthetics in keeping with the overall architectural styling.

The Unex design team developed a series of solutions criteria using the proprietary Extreme Barriers and Aluma balustrade suites, comprising of high tensile aluminium framing and toughened safety glass infill.

In due course, the balustrade was prefabricated in New Zealand, containerised and shipped to Niue. A team of Unex installers were deployed to Niue to carry out the installation on site. In August 2017, the project was completed and the result was very rewarding for all involved.

When next planning a holiday to relax on a sun-drenched tropical island, Unex strongly recommends paying Niue a visit.

Featuring a polished and timeless design, the effortless Ascot incorporates a 16mm square vertical baluster infill between two vertical 50mm square posts, with a top and bottom rail.

The Ascot vertical baluster style by UNEX can be used for both external and internal applications, including decks, balconies, stairways and landings, mezzanine floors, pedestrian gates, and pool fences.

UNEX balustrades are designed to and comply with 'A', 'B', 'E' and 'C3' loadings of AS/NZS 1170.1:2002 for residential applications, office, and work areas, as well as areas for moving people without obstacles.

A wide range of fixing options are available to fix to the top and sides of both timber and concrete substrates. UNEX's DKG2 gutter bracket system is designed for membrane decks with gutters and waterproofing considerations. Site-specific specifications may also be provided upon request for those non-standard situations

UNEX has designed its range of balustrade styles to comply with the B1, B2, E2, and F4 requirements of the NZ Building Code and are suitable for occupancy types 'A', 'B', 'E' and 'C3' in accordance with AS/NZS 1170.

UNEX Extreme Barriers are specifically engineered to comply with the extremely heavy liveload classes 'C1/C2', 'D' or 'C5' of the New Zealand Building Code legally required for public and crowded areas.

UNEX's Extreme Barriers Style has two ranges — X1500 Series and X3000 Series

The X1500 Series is designed to meet classifications C1/C2 and D of AS/NZS 1170.1, which stipulates a 1.5kN/m load on the top edge — twice the load required on a typical residential application
The X3000 Series is designed to meet classifications C5 of AS/NZS 1170.1 which stipulates a 3.0kN/m load on the top edge — four times the load required on a typical residential application.

The Extreme Framed Glass Styles are typically used for, but not limited to:

Sports and surf clubs
Shopping centres and retail areas
Restaurants, cafes, and bars
School halls, and public pavilions

Extreme Barriers are also suited to other situations where large post spacings, a bulkier look or additional height is required.
