Wet areas are among the most demanding interior spaces to design. Beyond aesthetics, architects must consider moisture management, long-term durability, ease of maintenance and how each component contributes to a compliant waterproofing system.

Dumawall is a 5mm-thick uPVC wall lining for internal vertical applications. Available as Dumawall+ tiles and large-format Dumawall XL panels, it provides a waterproof, grout-free finished surface with interlocking tongue-and-groove joints which offers a clean, low-maintenance alternative to traditional ceramic tiles.

How Dumawall manages moisture

Dumawall supports compliance with NZ Building Code Clause E3 Internal Moisture by providing a moisture-resistant, easy-to-clean finished surface. It does not replace the waterproofing membrane: in showers and other wet areas, the substrate must first be waterproofed using a suitable system, with compatibility confirmed between the membrane, Modified Silicone (MS) Polymer High Tack Adhesive and substrate.

BRANZ guidance provides useful parameters for establishing the extent of the wet-area assembly. In enclosed showers, impervious wall linings should be continuous, extend at least 1,800mm above the floor or upstand, and continue at least 300mm above the showerhead. For open showers, the impervious lining should extend within a 1,500mm horizontal radius of the showerhead. Project-specific requirements should always be confirmed against current NZBC provisions and the selected waterproofing manufacturer’s instructions.

Dumawall is suited to showers, bathrooms, ensuites, laundries, kitchens, vanity surrounds and changing rooms. Its lightweight format and ability to be installed over suitable existing wall coverings, including approved tiled surfaces, can also reduce demolition and disruption in renovation projects*.

Practical specification and installation benefits

The grout-free surface reduces maintenance and creates a cleaner visual finish with fewer joints where soap residue and dirt can accumulate. Tile and large-format panel options give designers flexibility in scale and appearance, while aluminium trims provide defined solutions for corners and terminations. Fixtures such as shelves and shower rails must be fixed through the lining to framing, with penetrations correctly sealed.

*Dumawall should not be installed behind stoves or cooktops. The panels have a maximum recommended contact temperature of 60°C; prolonged exposure to higher temperatures may cause deformation.
