A Lower Impact Option for Achieving the Timber Batten Look

Not every application suits the same material. PSP's Archi-Line aluminium batten system offers a concealed-fix, low-maintenance alternative to timber, manufactured from 100% recyclable aluminium with a 15-year performance warranty, giving designers a lower-impact way to achieve the same linear architectural language across exterior, commercial and high-traffic settings.

Timber, aluminium and application demands

Linear battens bring rhythm, depth and definition to architectural spaces, but not every application places the same demands on a material.

Natural timber brings warmth and texture that is difficult to replicate. But where exposure, maintenance, durability or performance requirements become a priority, aluminium battens offer another way to achieve the linear architectural language designers want.

Recyclability and long-term environmental performance

Archi-Line's environmental performance is built into the material itself. The battens are manufactured from 100% recyclable aluminium, using a non-chromate pre-treatment ahead of a VOC-free powder coat. The sublimated timber-grain finish carries a 15-year performance warranty and is tested to AAMA2604 standards for colour retention, humidity resistance and chemical resistance. Testing indicates the battens will not rot, warp or crack, or need recoating, where timber battens in equivalent exposures would typically need sanding, oiling or replacement. Turning a single specification decision into a feature that holds its appearance for at least fifteen years, and remains recyclable rather than becoming waste at end of life.

Matching material to application

This becomes particularly relevant in exterior, commercial and high-traffic environments. Weather exposure, maintenance access, coating requirements and fire performance can influence whether timber remains the most appropriate solution.

Good material specification isn't about choosing a favourite material. It's about choosing the right material for the application.

The Archi-Line Concealed-Fix System

PSP's Archi-Line aluminium batten system provides an alternative where those demands call for a lower-maintenance, durable solution. Its concealed-fix system suits feature walls, ceilings, soffits, façade detailing and decorative screening, with multiple profiles, spacers and extenders letting designers control depth, spacing and repetition.

Maintenance, fire performance and finish flexibility

For larger commercial or exterior projects, a consistent finish without ongoing recoating is valuable in hard-to-access areas or where long-term maintenance needs to be minimised.

Fire performance requirements may also limit the suitability of a timber batten solution; aluminium allows the architectural intent to be retained while meeting the project's performance requirements.

Aluminium battens do not need to simply imitate timber. Archi-Line spans timber-look finishes and contemporary solid colours, including Flat White, from a warmer, timber-inspired aesthetic through to a crisp, restrained architectural feature.

Letting the application guide the decision

Timber and aluminium do not need to compete. The right solution depends on the environment, design intent, maintenance expectations and performance requirements.

By starting with the application, designers can make a more considered material choice while retaining the strong linear expression battens bring to architecture.
