After more than three decades working with aluminium, Nu Wall is entering its next chapter with a clearer vision for the role architectural aluminium cladding can play in New Zealand architecture. Performance, guided by place
Performance is not an absolute. It is a response to exposure.
A façade in a severe marine environment is subject to very different conditions from one surrounded by vegetation, within a dense urban setting or exposed at altitude. Salt deposition, moisture, UV, wind, temperature variation and atmospheric contaminants can influence coating durability, appearance retention, maintenance requirements and long-term façade performance.

These environments provide a framework for considering performance in context.
Establishing exposure early allows material and coating performance, durability requirements and maintenance expectations to inform the specification before decisions around profile, finish and colour are finalised.
It shifts the question from simply what can this product do? to what does the building require this system to do here, and for how long?
From performance to possibility
Technical performance should provide the foundation for architectural freedom, not limit it.
Aluminium combines dimensional stability, corrosion resistance and low material weight with considerable flexibility in profile, orientation, finish and colour. As a non-combustible material that does not absorb moisture, rot or warp, it provides a stable substrate for façade systems across a wide range of New Zealand conditions.
Once the performance baseline is understood, the specification journey becomes connected: Place. Profile. Finish. Colour.
Profile establishes form, scale, orientation and shadow. Finish selection responds to exposure, durability and surface performance. Colour considers architectural intent alongside environmental factors such as UV exposure, heat absorption and appearance retention.
Each decision can then be made within an understood technical context rather than in isolation.
Performance over time
Specification does not end at practical completion.
Material and system decisions influence how a façade weathers, how frequently it requires maintenance, how well its appearance is retained and ultimately the service life and whole-of-life value of the building envelope.
That makes durability more than a product characteristic. It is an outcome of appropriate material selection, system design, finish specification, environmental exposure and ongoing maintenance working together.
