APL’s Hautapu manufacturing facility is one of the most significant recent industrial developments in New Zealand, both for its scale and for the way sustainability, building performance and manufacturing efficiency were integrated from the outset.

Designed by Jasmax for Profile Group, the Cambridge project spans approximately 50,000m² and accommodates APL Manufacturing and AGP’s advanced glass processing operations within a single, purpose-built campus. It was conceived not simply as a large factory, but as a high-performing industrial environment that could support long-term business growth while setting a benchmark for sustainable design.

At the centre of the building’s performance story is the roof. More than 50,000m² of Kingspan KS1000RW Trapezoidal Roof Panel was installed across the facility, making it one of the largest roofing projects Kingspan has undertaken in Australasia. The insulated roof panel system combines a steel outer sheet with Kingspan’s high-performance PIR insulated core and steel liner, creating a single-component roof build-up that streamlines installation while delivering strong thermal performance. Because the panels are manufactured off site to the required length, including cut-backs for gutters and laps, installation progressed quickly and helped accelerate the wider construction programme, allowing following trades and concrete works to move ahead sooner.

Beyond programme efficiency, the Kingspan roof played a key role in the building’s environmental and operational performance. The insulated panel system supports insulation continuity, helps minimise air leakage, and reduces risks associated with condensation and cold bridging — critical considerations in a large industrial building expected to perform consistently over time. In a project defined by scale, sustainability and long-term thinking, the roof is not simply an enclosure; it is one of the core systems enabling APL Hautapu to function as a durable, energy-conscious and future-focused 5-star Greenstar Industrial Built rated, manufacturing facility.
