A Sustainable Geometric Carpet Tile Design for the New Inland Revenue Offices in Christchurch

Designers know the challenge: translating a visual concept into a functional, sustainable interior on a modest budget. For the Inland Revenue Christchurch fit-out, Warren and Mahoney needed a flooring solution that honoured a culturally resonant concept while meeting strict environmental benchmarks. They turned to Heritage Carpets for the answer.

The brief: A workplace that feels like home

Inland Revenue’s new Christchurch office was envisioned as “Our Kāinga – a home for all.” A place of belonging and well-being, inspired by Ngā Hau e Whā (The Four Winds), the design reflects navigation, balance, and the connection between people and place. Key to this vision was a material palette that grounded the design in Aotearoa’s landscape and culture — particularly the natural geometry of the Canterbury Plains.

Flooring that supports storytelling and sustainability

Warren and Mahoney selected a 500 x 500mm carpet tile format. With a layout that used 45° cuts to achieve bold diagonal geometry, the solution reinforced the overall spatial rhythm, while simplifying installation.

Heritage Carpets recommended products from the Heritage Collection by modulyss: Meadow and Cobbles — both subtly textured loop piles that echo the calm, tonal quality of the Canterbury landscape.

Partnership that goes beyond the surface

According to Sarah Budden and Holly Gapinski from the Warren and Mahoney design team, Heritage Carpets’ contribution was integral. “Their responsiveness, transparency, and attention to detail — especially around colour matching and sustainable product options — made the process seamless.”

Crucially, Heritage Carpets supported the team with environmental documentation for integration into a parallel carbon tracking initiative. This allowed the designers to confidently specify low-carbon products that aligned with both aesthetic and sustainability goals.

A go-to for designers seeking certainty and collaboration

Whether it's through helping a design team navigate colour palettes, providing samples on tight timelines, or supporting compliance for Green Star or embodied carbon targets, Heritage Carpets solves a core problem for interior designers: how to deliver bold, meaningful design while meeting real-world project constraints.

This project is a clear example of how Heritage Carpets' agility, expertise, and product portfolio empower designers to do their best work — without compromise.
