Adhering Tiles to Fibreglass or Acrylic
Description
  • Direct-bond tiling system for rigid fibreglass reinforced plastic or acrylic wall linings in high-hygiene, wet or chemically cleaned interiors, using a defined prepare, prime and epoxy-bond methodology.
  • Surface is thoroughly degreased, uniformly abraded to create a mechanical key, dust-free and dry, then primed with a non-porous primer for adhesion to plastic substrates.
  • Tiles are fixed with a two-part epoxy adhesive to deliver high bond on low-absorption surfaces, excellent chemical and water resistance, and reliable workability in confined amenity spaces.
  • Grouting is selected to the regime, epoxy grout for hygiene and aggressive cleaning or cement grout for standard areas, with sanitary silicone at all perimeters and changes in plane for movement accommodation.
  • Where waterproofing is required by design, a compatible liquid or sheet membrane is incorporated and verified with junction reinforcement and, where specified, a flood test prior to tiling.
  • The system supports NZ practice for E3 Internal Moisture in wet areas and contributes to B2 Durability and F2 Hazardous Building Materials when installed and maintained to the specification.
  • Handover and lifecycle care follow a neutral pH cleaning pathway with targeted first-clean products for cement haze or epoxy residue, supporting long-term appearance and hygiene.
Key Features
  • Direct tiling to rigid fibreglass or acrylic using a two-part epoxy adhesive that meets ISO 13007 and EN 12004 R2T, with high chemical resistance and excellent workability.
  • Techno Primer 101 non-porous primer improves adhesion and compatibility with epoxy adhesives on plastic-based substrates.
  • Defined surface preparation includes thorough clean and uniform abrasion with 40–60 grit to create a mechanical key, followed by complete dust removal and drying.
  • Epoxy or cement-based grout options cover hygiene, immersion and colour requirements, with sanitary silicone at all perimeters and changes in plane.
  • Coverage planning and pack sizes are available to support accurate take-offs and programming.
  • Lifecycle care pathway references Fila Solutions for initial clean, epoxy residue removal where relevant, and neutral pH maintenance.

Scope of Use
  • Interior walls and selected interior surfaces lined with rigid fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP/GRP) or acrylic sheet where direct bond tiling is required.
  • Commercial amenities, kitchens, laboratories and healthcare where chemical resistance and hygiene are important, when paired with epoxy grout.
  • Wet areas subject to intermittent water exposure when the substrate is rigid and properly supported and when junctions are sealed with silicone.
  • Use in conjunction with an approved waterproofing system when a waterproofing layer is required by the design or E3/AS2 IWAM Code of Practice.
  • Consult Surtec for project-specific advice on unusual substrates, interfaces and junction detailing.
Limitations on Use
  • Not suitable for thin, flexible or free-standing acrylic liners, or any substrate with excessive deflection or movement beyond tile industry limits.
  • Substrates must be rigid, clean, uniformly abraded and dry before priming and tiling.
  • Install only between 5°C and 30°C and protect from water and cleaning until adhesive and grout have cured per the technical data sheets.
  • Movement joints must be respected through the tile finish and sealed with silicone, not grouted.
  • Where a full waterproofing system is required, incorporate a compliant liquid or sheet membrane and complete a flood test before tiling.
Statement of Building Code Compliance
  • When designed and installed as described, this system can be used to contribute to compliance with New Zealand Building Code Clause E3 Internal Moisture for surface finishes in wet areas, referencing IWAM Code of Practice and AS 3740 where applicable.
  • The components meet durability requirements of Clause B2 for the intended life of the building element when installed and maintained in accordance with Surtec guidance and product technical data.
  • Clause F2 Hazardous Building Materials is satisfied as the components do not contain or emit hazardous materials in use.
  • Designers remain responsible for overall compliance of the building work.
In-Service History
  • Technokolla epoxy adhesives and grouts are widely used in immersed and chemically exposed environments internationally and in New Zealand projects where hygiene is critical, including pools and industrial areas.
  • Primer 101 and Acesil silicone are long-running products in the Technokolla range, with established use locally across non-porous substrates and sanitary joints.
Other Performance Attributes
  • Epoxy adhesive classification R2T per ISO 13007 and EN 12004 provides high bond strength on non-porous substrates and excellent chemical resistance.
  • Sanitary silicone includes fungicide and maintains elasticity for movement accommodation at junctions.
  • Optional lifecycle care pathway supports hygiene and appearance using neutral pH daily cleaners and targeted products for grout haze or epoxy residue removal.
