Christchurch City’s glittering new sport and concert venue, One New Zealand Stadium, was a window and glazing project on a grand scale for Canterbury company, Hagley Windows and Doors.

Hagley, a Vantage windows manufacturer, supplied all the vertical glazing for the $656m project, working for more than two years delivering 2,200 different pieces of glass in a variety of window systems.

The metrics for the window contract were striking — 16 different glass types installed, with an area of 6,600m². A total of 27km of aluminium window and door extrusions were supplied to Hagley from APL Window Solutions for assembly into the stadium’s window systems. These systems included the arena’s external vertical glazing as well as windows and doors on interior applications like corporate suites and media room.

Hagley’s modern Islington factory itself set new benchmarks for the city when it was constructed a few years ago — at 11,000m² in size it is one of the biggest window operations in New Zealand.

“We had to demonstrate advanced technical capability across many of our teams for the stadium project,” said Hagley CEO, Kerry Edwards. “All parts of the company were involved from design, shop drawing, project management, logistics, problem solving, manufacturing, delivery and execution."

“One New Zealand Stadium was probably our most demanding and ambitious commercial project to date. Extensive structural glazing, entrance systems, bespoke brackets and flashings and integrated ventilation solutions were engineered to meet challenging requirements for seismic performance, crowd safety, durability, weather resistance, and turf protection.”

The complete joinery and glazing package on the multi-purpose, roofed venue included systems from the APL commercial range, predominantly the 150mm Flushglaze, 175mm Structural Glaze and 200mm Structural Glaze suites. One New Zealand Stadium was one of the biggest APL jobs of recent years.

Among the glass suppliers to the project was Architectural Glass Products (AGP), sister company of APL, who supplied 114 IGU’s for the west façade curtain wall. Outer panes had 8mm solar control glass, with inner panes, at levels subject to possible human impact, in clear toughened and heat soaked. Inners ranged from 6mm to 10mm thickness.

The stadium architects were Warren and Mahoney and the constructor BESIX Watpac.
