Soft-close Cavity Slider Connects New and Old in Kohimarama Home

A key challenge for this renovation project, which included an add-on with a living area and master bedroom, was to ensure connection between new and existing wings of the home. For the passageway connecting the two areas, the homeowners wanted the best of both worlds — for there to be separation when desired, but seamless flow at other times. CS For Doors worked with the architects to engineer a smart cavity slider solution that met this brief, as well as additional cavity sliders that maximise space in other areas of the home.

To provide connection between the existing space and the new lounge in the extension, the architects designed a large 2m-wide passageway with a glass panel sliding door to separate the spaces. When open, they wanted the door to be concealed within a pocket, so the wall feels uninterrupted. With the weight of the large glass panel in mind, they also wanted a soft close mechanism to make sure it wouldn’t damage the wall or door.

Peter Zhang, Business Development Manager at CS For Doors worked with the architects and homeowners to find the right solution for the project. “We spent a lot of time considering functionality and how the door could be concealed to create that wow factor when not in use,” explains Peter. “At almost 100kg, the door also needed heavy duty aluminium for the extrusion, carriages and mounting plate so that the hardware could carry that heavy weight.”

The CS For Doors team engineered a bespoke solution featuring a made-to-measure New Yorker aluminium glazed door, with a soft close CS SquareFormed cavity slider which combines a full height detail and no closing jamb. The aluminium was custom finished to match the colours of the adjacent window joinery, helping to achieve the seamless, minimal look the clients wanted. This attention to detail has resulted in a solution that perfectly hits the brief — it is subtle when in use, matching the home’s aesthetic, and unnoticeable when hidden away in the cavity.

“It's great having that large glass panel because it provides clear sightlines right through to the outer garden and deck area, and when it’s hidden away you don’t even notice it’s there” say the homeowners. “The soft close system means that although it’s a heavy door, it’s easy to move. It also provides soundproofing, particularly when kids are watching sport or movies.”

Another smart solution in the home is a CS Bi-Parting cavity slider used in the office. The architects specified the cavity slider in a two-door bi-parting configuration to increase the sense of space and connect the lounge area to the southern view from the office when opened, which looks onto neighbouring pohutukawa.

“The cavity slider has maximised space in the office, and allowed the architects to design full length desks on either side,” say the homeowners. “When the doors are open, the space feels really generous, and looking through the room, the eyes are drawn to the view. And having the double doors with a magnetic pull secures the doors easily — it’s a great way to shut out the rest of the house when working or studying.”

And in the master ensuite a soft close CS cavity slider with CL400 Magnetic privacy handles was installed, again maximising use of the space with the door concealing into the wall when not in use. “The door gives us seamless entry from the bedroom to the shower and has made the bathroom feel really generous and usable,” say the homeowners. “The soft close on it is a nice experience.”

Ultimately the cavity sliders provided by CS For Doors have enhanced this family home, bringing added functionality, improved use of space, and even a little wow factor. The homeowners are thrilled with the results and have peace of mind knowing that the cavity sliders are all covered by BRANZ appraisals and are backed by a 10-year warranty.

Having supplied smart cavity slider systems for over 40 years, CS For Doors pride themselves on providing innovative solutions that help architects and designers achieve their designs. “We can always find a solution for the customer, even when size and weight is an issue,” explains Peter Zhang, CS For Doors. “With our factory and research and development team there to help, we can configure the right product and the right components to meet the right purpose.”
