H1 Roof Design: Managing Thermal Performance, Solar Gain and System Selection with COLORSTEEL

As H1 energy efficiency requirements continue to lift performance expectations for residential buildings under 300m², the roof is increasingly recognised as a critical driver of whole-of-building thermal performance. With roof surfaces exposed to solar radiation approaching 1 kW/m², material selection, colour choice and roof system design directly influence heat gain, internal comfort and cooling demand. This places renewed emphasis on specifying roofing systems that balance compliance, durability and long-term energy outcomes.

Roof cladding can experience extreme heat loads under peak summer conditions. Research from the Metal Roofing Manufacturers Association of New Zealand Code of Practice indicates that dark coloured steel roofs can reach surface temperatures of up to around 80-90°C under peak summer conditions. As a result, roofing material, coating technology and colour selection play an important role in managing heat gain and supporting energy efficient building design.

COLORSTEEL roofing products offer architects and designers options that support H1 performance while maintaining durability and design flexibility.

Roof colour has a measurable impact on thermal performance. Studies show that lighter or more reflective roofs can reduce solar heat gain by up to around 30% compared with darker colours. COLORSTEEL incorporates advanced paint technology that balances solar reflectance and thermal emittance, helping roofs reflect incoming solar radiation and release absorbed heat. Infrared reflective pigments used by COLORSTEEL also reduce solar absorptance, particularly in darker colours when compared with similar products without this technology.

Roof reflectivity may also support rooftop photovoltaic performance. Research suggests lighter or more reflective roof surfaces can improve solar generation by up to around 10% when used with optimised roof designs and bifacial solar panels, which capture reflected light from both sides of the module to increase overall energy yield.

Achieving H1 compliance requires consideration of the full roof assembly, including insulation, ventilation and moisture management. Both warm roof and cold roof systems can meet H1 requirements. Warm roofs place insulation above a structural deck, while cold roofs locate insulation at ceiling level and rely on ventilation within the roof cavity. Designers are encouraged to consider tested proprietary warm roof systems to support predictable performance and streamlined compliance.

Durability remains a key consideration in specification. COLORSTEEL products are backed by a dual warranty covering corrosion resistance and paint performance, with protection of up to 50 years for corrosion and up to 18 years for paint finish, depending on product and environment.

Technical resources including solar absorptance, total solar reflectance and light reflectance value data are available across the COLORSTEEL colour range to support specification decisions.
