Pre-Cladding Systems: The Critical Foundation Behind High-Performing Facades

As New Zealand buildings face increasing exposure to severe weather events, seismic movement, and more demanding energy-efficiency requirements, attention to what sits behind the cladding layer has never been more important.

Rigid air barriers offer buildability advantages to significantly speed up construction during the winter months, and offer early bracing to the structure months before internal linings can be installed. Once built, rigid air barriers play a critical role as both a bracing element and a second layer of defence in managing moisture control and preventing air leakage, leading to better thermal performance and long-term durability.

CSR Façade Systems: The complete package to envelope your build

The Cemintel Rigid Air Barrier can be used independently, or to complement CSR’s complete solutions package for the building envelope achieving E2 and H1 requirements under a single supplier warranty — CSR New Zealand.

CSR New Zealand leads innovation in façade systems with Cemintel pre-finished cladding, PGH brick, and Hebel facades. Combined with the latest in high-performance, installer friendly, glasswool insulation with Bradford Gold for a complete solution to the building envelope.

Today we focus on that second layer of defence, offering you both peace of mind in design and longevity in the build. The Cemintel Rigid Air Barrier is a non-combustible 6mm fibre cement board, offering a 6 month exposure warranty to support early close-in, reducing costly weather related delays so you can get on with the interior fit-out earlier.

Application and quality reassurance: Peace of mind and a brand you can trust

The Cemintel Rigid Air Barrier is manufactured to conform to the requirements of AS/NZS 2908.2. and backed by BRANZ Appraisal No. 1055, with a 10 year product warranty and a 50 year durability warranty when incorporated as a bracing system. Along with buildability advantages it is suitable for both timber or steel framing. It provides a second layer of defence for weathertightness, and can be installed to achieve bracing performance for buildings designed under the scope of NZS3604. It is suitable for wind zones up to Extra High, and via Specific Engineered Design (SED), it can be incorporated on projects with wind pressures up to a maximum ultimate limit state (ULS) of 2.5kPa.

Additional design considerations and system accessories

The Cemintel Rigid Air Barrier System can be used as an alternative to metal straps or wire dog connectors to achieve a top plate connection capacity of 4.7 kN, in accordance with Fixing Type B of NZS 3604, Table 8.18.

All vertical sheet joints, internal and external corners must be covered with Marshall Innovations SUPER-STICK Flexible Flashing Tape. Flexible sill and jamb tape flashing system must be installed in accordance with the tape manufacturer’s instructions. The manufacturer’s instructions including the application temperatures for the joint sealing tape must be followed.
