Rethinking Timber: Sustainable Innovation with BiForm Composite Decking

As the industry sharpens its focus on environmental accountability, BiForm’s composite decking boards offer a high-performance alternative to traditional hardwoods, delivering material consistency and design flexibility without compromising on sustainability.

Over the past 20 years, BiForm has continued to develop and improve its flagship product, ensuring that it meets the ever-changing requirements and trends of the New Zealand construction industry. Made up of 60% FSC certified timber and 30% recycled plastic, BiForm stands apart from most composites on the market. For every 40m² deck specified, approximately 14,063 plastic bottles are diverted from landfill and recycled, alongside the equivalent of one 10m tree of ethically sourced FSC certified timber. The result is a robust, timber-look product that supports long-term durability and reduces the environmental degradation associated with imported hardwoods.

Proudly Red List Free and bearing a Declare label from the Living Future Institute, BiForm is also Homestar and Green Star point-contributing, making it well-suited to projects aligned with NZGBC sustainability frameworks.

Architects and designers working with BiForm also gain access to a suite of tools designed to reduce waste at every stage of the build. BiForm’s Deck Layout Design Service provides custom layout drawings and accurate material takeoffs, including clip and screw quantities, enabling more efficient installation and minimising offcuts and construction waste.

Beyond the product, BiForm continues to deepen its environmental impact. In partnership with Trees That Count, every deck purchased funds the planting of native trees for local restoration projects. The company also operates a Packaging Takeback Program, allowing contractors to return product packaging for closed-loop recycling, reducing landfill waste and supporting circularity.

As projects increasingly prioritise material transparency, lifecycle awareness, and regenerative outcomes, BiForm composite decking provides a clear path forward, bridging natural aesthetics with engineered performance and real sustainability outcomes.
