The Avenue Apartments provide high-end independent living with access to a rich range of amenities as part of the Remuera Gardens community. Connection to the outdoors is a key part of the development, with the main outdoor area featuring a recreation area and bowling green, while private balconies from each apartment provide views to the outdoors. To ensure safety, maximise views, and complement the aesthetic, SkyRail Aluminium and Glass balustrades from Altech Systems were chosen for the project.
For the apartment balustrades, the designers wanted to maximise views to the outdoors. “Apartments are provided with private balconies with views, depending on aspect views include College Riffles sport ground, the bowling green and the surrounding suburb,” explains Kyla Wilson, Associate, BDG Architects. “Skyrail Glass balustrades were chosen here to provide clean fixing details with minimum obstruction of the views.”
Skyrail Glass balustrades are ideal for providing clear views to the outdoors. They feature an aluminium face-fixed continuous base channel to effectively support the glass, and can be supplied glass only with sentry laminated glass, or with an interlinking hand rail depending on project preferences. For the apartment balconies, handrails powder coated in Duratec Grey Friars were chosen to complement the building’s aesthetic.
Skyrail balustrades were also used for outdoor areas which provide shared space for social activities. “The main outdoor area has been designed to provide a recreation area with a bowling green and outdoor seating spilling out from a common lounge,” says Kyla. “The balustrade used for this area is the Skyrail Aluminium Series.”
The Skyrail Aluminium Series is a versatile, robust and cost-effective balustrade option that has been used for over 30 years as both a barrier and fence system for walkways, ramps, stairs and outdoor living areas. For this project, the vertical fins were powder coated in Duratec Grey Friars to match the project aesthetic. “The vertical fins of this balustrade complemented the vertical battens on the pergola structures around the bowling green,” says Kyla.
Project contractors Kalmar Construction appreciated the support and expertise Altech Systems were able to offer throughout the project. “They were very helpful,” says Steven Francis, Quantity Surveyor, Kalmar Construction. “They know their systems very well, what they can do and how to adapt when there are challenges. They provided all the support we needed.”
That support included recommending a balustrade installer for the project, and assisting with a fixing detail issue — adapting the system to suit the design and meet compliance without affecting the aesthetic.
Now open with the first residents moving in, The Avenue Apartments are a vibrant new addition to the Remuera Gardens complex. The Skyrail balustrades maximise views, delineate outdoor recreation areas and play a key role in ensuring the enjoyment of the outdoors for residents.
“Altech Systems were able to offer balustrades that fit with the aesthetic that we were after and at a competitive pricing,” says Kyla. “We’re happy with the final result.”
