A first-of-its-kind facility

Located at 109 Salisbury Street, the Christchurch Youth Hub is New Zealand’s first purpose-built facility for young people aged 10 to 25. Developed in collaboration with rangatahi and local stakeholders, the Hub combines transitional housing, health services, education, and recreational spaces in a single, integrated precinct.

Stage One, completed in late 2024, includes housing for 22 young people, wrap-around support service areas, and an outdoor activity courtyard. The design prioritised inclusiveness, safety, and long-term wellbeing — essential values in a facility built for youth development and care.

A roof with demanding performance needs

The project presented a clear challenge: the need for a low-pitch (1°) roofing solution that would deliver across multiple performance categories — thermal comfort, energy efficiency, durability, and compliance. Traditional roofing systems fell short in key areas such as insulation performance and long-term maintenance, particularly under the demands of a high-occupancy facility.

Specified solution: Nuralite 3PM Warm Roof System

To meet these requirements, the design team specified the Nuralite 3PM Warm Roof System, proven for low-slope applications and selected for its ability to:

• Deliver consistent thermal performance, supporting internal temperature stability
• Provide robust weather protection and low-maintenance durability
• Meet regulatory needs with CodeMark certification, simplifying the consent process
• Integrate cleanly with the broader architectural envelope

The system also supports the project’s sustainability goals by reducing reliance on active heating and cooling systems — improving energy efficiency in daily operations.

Collaboration in execution

Installation was the result of close coordination between Field Studio of Architecture, Gunac Waterproofing Specialists, Nuralite, and main contractor Naylor Love. This collaborative approach ensured precision detailing and system integrity — critical in a high-use facility supporting vulnerable youth.

Outcome

The completed roof is a warm, high-performing solution that contributes directly to occupant wellbeing, long-term building performance, and reduced maintenance overhead. It plays a crucial role in supporting the Christchurch Youth Hub’s broader mission: to offer young people a safe, future-ready space where they can grow, connect, and thrive.
