Solatube Systems Deliver Natural Daylight to Internal Hotel Rooms

This project featured the construction of a 5-storey, 76-room boutique hotel in Cairns with a roof top bar and garden. The hotel was built above live retail tenancies, including some with 24-hour trading operations.

The room layout of the building demanded the delivery of daylight to Internal rooms with no windows to the outside. The proposed solution was to provide lighting ducts with false windows internally and through these cast daylight into the internal rooms. The architects discussed the scenario with Solatube Australia, and design proceeded utilising Solatube SolaMaster Daylighting Units with 99.7% Spectralight Infinity tubes to deliver daylight from the top/roof level to the 1st floor and the associated floors above.

SolaMaster 750DS systems were selected as best option to meet the project's objectives. Tube lengths up to 17m long were required, which were enclosed within fire rated ducts — this allowed the daylight to be delivered through the long tubes into these ducts and through false internal windows within the room.

Solatube Daylighting Systems used in project:

  • 17x SolaMaster 750DS — including Inner Domes
  • 17x Spectralight Infinity 17 Drops — 600mm long tubes (418 tubes in total)
  • 17x Prismatic Diffusers
