As a technical consultant and specification writer I am involved in subfloor preparation and flooring installation specification systems solutions, and E3 building integrity is a key component of my role. I have worked with architectural practices in DHB, aged care, education, hospitality and commercial projects specification nationally for years. I have written both generic and Masterspec specifications and developed many types of seamless flooring systems, including disabled access wet rooms, in conjunction with our supply partners. If left unmanaged, there are E3 building integrity problems and challenges that can have a negative impact on your planning and specification of MDH in these times of change.
Problem: Wet concrete
I get calls every month regarding E3 Internal Moisture issues from flooring contractors. Most calls are for a quick fix solution because the concrete relative humidity (RH) is much too high to install floor preparation and installation systems over. 75% or less is NZBC RH requirement which always costs more time and money to fix when the floors need to be installed. Times have changed and building is faster, so how to specify warranted effective moisture control in concrete treatment?
The solution: Gilt Edge Concrete Cure, Hardener, Moisture Control and Protection
Protect Crete NZ Ltd is a unique and VOC-free technology that not only cures, waterproofs, repels contamination, hardens, densifies, and protects the concrete but also enables rapid application of topical coatings such as vinyl and other floor coverings, line marking, paint, epoxies, and sealers, resulting in significant project cost savings. New formulation with SteriTouch delivers permanent protection from bacteria, viruses and moulds and is HACCP approved.

Problem: Composite timber subfloors
I have seen construction technology changing in subfloor construction with the increasing use of Cross Laminate Timber (CLT), Parallel Laminate Timber (PLT), and composite timer. How to ensure E3 Building Integrity Systems are fully compatible with these types of materials as well as concrete?
The solution: Gilt Edge Floor Levelling Systems
Gilt Edge specialise in rapid installation systems for all types of sub floors including CLT, PLT, and composite sheet. Technically sound specification of primers, levelling compounds, and damp-proofing/wet room systems are essential to long term E3 building performance. Compatible adhesives for carpet, resilient, laminate and wood flooring are included in Gilt Edge Systems to deliver fully warranted E3 Systems Solutions on any type of subfloor.

Problem: New NZBC Clause E3-AS1 Internal Moisture 4.11.21
This new clause focuses on the use of the popular architectural choice laminate and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) in wet rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, toilets, and laundries. This clause now has water splash and containment definitions. So how to respond to local authorities with compatible systems installations over concrete and timber incorporating BRANZ appraised waterproof membrane systems where containment is required?
The solution: E3/AS1-compliant Gilt Edge specifications
Gilt Edge Architectural have developed specifications for LVT and Laminate Overlay Wet Rooms Containment and Watersplash Installation Systems used in kitchens, laundries, bathrooms, and toilet areas where a building consent for new or refurbished work is required to comply with E3/AS1 building code.
