The angular, contemporary-styled homes which are configured for a quick build and delivered to sites like flat-pack furniture, received a Sustainable Industrial Design award.

Created by RTA Studio as a direct response to housing affordability, climate resilience and construction efficiency, the Living House package — currently a three-bedroom design but with one and two-bedroom options under development — have a tight range of supply partners with proven products. Residential Series ThermalHeart+ windows and doors from APL’s manufacturer network are in the mix, as well as AGP Solux-E glass.

The award judge’s comments noted RTA’s, “considered approach to low-cost housing that meets net carbon zero standards.” Timeliness and ambition were also applauded and “proof that sustainable design can also be affordable, dignified, and accessible.”

The three-bedroom homes are delivered for $335,000 above the foundations. Homeowners and their chosen builders receive a detailed design package, including a MultiProof approval certificate, drawings, specifications and supporting documents.

Daryne Begbie, Project Development Manager, for The Living House, said that projects were underway in both the North and South Islands, including coastal holiday destinations. The whole emphasis was on affordability and quickness to build.

Prototyping on a Rotorua site had demonstrated that a six-week construction time was realistic. “Builders have been positive and interested in the design and its approach to a different way of construction. A small crew can assemble the 36 panels for the floor, walls and roof with a crane in just five days,” said Daryne. “And other contractors like electricians and plumbers are only on site for a day or two."

“We’re not traditional builders or developers, but we have designed a highly efficient, low-waste way to build. It’s light and cheerful. It’s great to live in.”
