For outdoor kitchens, the choice of materials must balance design precision with performance in the elements. In this coastal project by Modi Design and Three-Sixty Architecture, Dekton by Cosentino was selected for its strength, UV stability, and refined aesthetic, enabling a seamless connection between architecture, design and the surrounding landscape.
For designer Georgia Langridge of Modi Design, the brief was clear: create an outdoor kitchen that mirrored the elegance of the home’s classic architecture while supporting the relaxed, social lifestyle of a modern family.
Positioned at the heart of the alfresco area, the outdoor kitchen features Dekton, Opera (12mm, Velvet finish) on benchtops and cabinetry fronts. Its soft grey veining and marble-like character add depth and sophistication to the space, creating a focal point that feels both classic and contemporary.
“We loved the veining of Dekton, Opera, which brings great prominence to the central outdoor area dedicated to al fresco dining,” says Georgia.
Complementing this, Dekton, Zenith (20mm) was applied to the BBQ area and bar, featuring a curved form that showcases the surface’s versatility and precision in fabrication. The crisp, matte white of Zenith accentuates the home’s clean architectural lines and provides a striking contrast to the lush green surroundings and textured mosaic tiles.
While the design focused on balance and form, durability was equally important. The space is fully exposed to the elements, so a surface that could perform outdoors was essential. Georgia explains her choice of Dekton: “These are highly durable materials, resistant to UV rays, scratches and heat, among other exceptional properties, as well as being low-maintenance.” Dekton is also backed by a 25-year warranty, giving designers confidence in specifying it for exterior applications.
The result is a bright, sculptural and highly functional outdoor living space designed to be enjoyed year-round.
With its combination of performance, versatility, and aesthetic balance, Dekton enables architects and designers to bring indoor-level detailing to exterior environments, perfectly suited to New Zealand’s love of outdoor living.
