Designing School Boundaries With Safety and Access in Mind

There is rarely one fencing solution that suits every part of an education site. A school perimeter may need to maintain visibility while limiting climbing, while playground areas bring more specific safety requirements. Entrances add another layer, particularly where access needs to work for a wide range of users. The challenge is choosing systems that respond appropriately to each part of the site while maintaining a cohesive and connected boundary throughout.

Where visibility across the perimeter is important, SentryPanel School Panel provides an open aluminium boundary without easy footholds. Maintaining sightlines through the fence allows staff to supervise children using areas close to the boundary, while the larger gap between horizontal rails helps make the panel difficult to climb. Raking panels allow the fence line to follow sloping ground.

Playground areas introduce additional safety considerations around the openings within the fence itself. SentryPanel Playground Panel has been developed specifically for these environments, with closer vertical bar spacing as its key safety feature. It can also rake across sloping ground and be paired with matching gates.

Not every part of a school site benefits from an open fence. Schools often share boundaries with neighbouring residential properties, where privacy and noise need to be considered alongside security. SmartWall provides a solid Cross Laminated Timber solution where greater separation is required. DuraPanel Delta and Titan, both F4 & F9 compliant, provide alternative aluminium options for elevated areas or to add variety to the site.

School entrances have to resolve two requirements that can pull in different directions, keeping young children safely within the grounds while making the gate accessible to the wider school community. Boundaryline's Perforated Panels and Gates can be paired with the Accessibility Latch to address both within one entrance system. The perforated panels maintain visibility and can incorporate custom school designs. The universal lever latch can be positioned 1000mm to 1200mm above ground level, while a separate child-safe latch sits higher on the inside of the gate. The system is designed in line with Ministry of Education Fencing at Schools guidance.

Matching gate options can be carried through the wider site so access points are resolved as part of the boundary design.
