Scope of Use

Basket floor traps are a practical solution for maintaining clean, efficient, and compliant drainage systems in areas with common food waste and debris.

  • These specialist floor wastes feature one removable strainer basket and one fixed strainer basket beneath the floor grate. These baskets capture solids while allowing water to drain, preventing blockages and ensuring compliance with trade waste discharge standards.
  • These drains are typically constructed from durable materials like stainless steel or cast iron, making them suitable for installation in floors with cement topping, sheet vinyl, tiles, or resin finishes.
  • Basket floor traps are installed in the drainage riser pipe below the floor surface. Their design allows for easy removal and cleaning of the strainer basket, ensuring ongoing efficiency and hygiene in high-debris environments.

Basket floor traps offer several key benefits for commercial kitchens, restaurants, and food processing facilities:

  • These floor wastes effectively intercept solid waste, such as food particles and rubbish, before it enters the plumbing, preventing blockages and reducing the need for costly maintenance.
  • Basket traps help minimise bacterial growth and contamination risks by stopping organic debris from accumulating in the drainage system, supporting a clean and sanitary environment for food handling.
  • The removable strainer basket and grate provide easy access for cleaning, making it simple to remove collected debris and maintain optimal drainage performance. This is vital for meeting food safety and health standards.
  • Made from robust materials like stainless steel, these basket traps resist corrosion and withstand frequent cleaning and heavy use, ensuring long-lasting reliability in demanding environments.
  • Basket floor traps help reduce slip-and-fall hazards by ensuring adequate drainage and keeping floors dry, contributing to a safer and more productive workspace.
Limitations on Use
  • The effectiveness of Basket Traps heavily depends on consistent cleaning and maintenance.
  • If not cleaned regularly, basket traps can become clogged with debris, grease, or solid waste, reducing drainage efficiency and potentially causing blockages.
  • Basket traps have a limited capacity for holding debris, making them less suitable for areas with high waste or grease volumes unless paired with additional treatment systems, such as grease traps.

Installation Requirements

  • Consider the floor depth, whether it is suspended or in-ground. Shallow or deep body traps can be acquired.
  • When inserting into pipe material, use appropriate fittings and O-rings. If waterproofing is needed, install a leak control flange.
  • Insert the waste body into the pipe and secure it using sealant around the flange if necessary.
  • Set the grate assembly to the appropriate height for the finished floor.
  • For vinyl flooring, apply the vinyl into the grate assembly and secure it with a clamping ring.
  • Insert the removable strainer basket inside the grate assembly.
  • Ensure compliance with all Building and Plumbing Standards.
  • Refer to the Datasheet;

Maintenance & Prevention Measures

  • Regular inspection and cleaning of the basket are essential for optimal performance to streamline maintenance and minimise downtime.
  • Clean the removable strainer basket daily or at the end of each shift, especially in food preparation spaces.
  • Periodically flush the basket with hot, soapy water to prevent sticky residues and grease buildup.
  • Regularly inspect the secondary strainer for blockages and clean it if necessary.
  • Clean grates regularly with detergent to minimise grease and debris accumulation.
  • Inspect the secondary strainer regularly to avoid clogging or damage.
  • Inspect components for signs of wear or corrosion and replace any damaged parts as needed.
  • Train staff on proper disposal practices to minimise debris entering the system.
  • Establish a routine cleaning and inspection schedule tailored to usage intensity.
  • Ensure clear access to the floor waste for cleaning and servicing, including installing nearby hose taps.
Statement of Building Code Compliance

SPS bucket floor wastes fully comply with the requirements and intent of G13/AS1, providing safe, maintainable, and practical floor waste solutions for commercial buildings in New Zealand.

SPS Bucket Trap Floor Wastes have been purposefully developed for the plumbing and drainage industry to address the stringent requirements for floor waste management in commercial buildings. They ensure compliance with the Australia/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 3500.2.2 and relevant New Zealand Building Code clauses such as G13 Foul Water and its acceptable solution G13/AS1.

SPS basket trap floor wastes comply with G13/AS1 of the New Zealand Building Code by meeting the specific requirements for floor waste outlets in commercial buildings:

  • Removable Grating: SPS basket floor wastes feature a removable grating that sits flush with the floor, as G13/AS1 3.4.1 requires. This ensures safe and easy movement for building occupants and facilitates maintenance.
  • Trap and Outlet Size: These floor wastes are designed with integrated traps and have outlet diameters that exceed the minimum 40 mm requirement specified in G13/AS1 3.4.2, ensuring adequate foul water drainage.
  • Trapping and Discharge: SPS basket floor wastes are trapped and can be configured to discharge above a gully trap or directly to the foul water system under G13/AS1 3.4.3, supporting proper foul water management and odour control.
  • Maintenance and Hygiene: The removable strainer basket and secondary strainer system allow for easy inspection and cleaning, which aligns with G13’s objectives to safeguard health and prevent the accumulation of offensive matter.
  • Quality and Safety: All grates are designed for maximum free area and slip resistance and manufactured with smooth finishes to minimize health risks. They support the functional and performance requirements of Clause G13 for safe, reliable foul water disposal in commercial environments.

Note: Compliance is contingent upon correct selection of the drain outlet size, the number of outlet drains provided for use, and the correct installation process.
