The brief

For this Auckland couple, their Mangawhai beach home is where much of life happens now, it’s a special place to create as a talented artist, or to play the region's stunning golf courses, to gather with extended family over long summer stretches and weekend escapes, and to spend time with the grandchildren and of course, Honey the dog.

When they set out to build the outdoor living space around the pool, the brief was simple: create an area that felt like a natural extension of the living room and kitchen, one that could comfortably host family and friends. The design needed to dissolve the line between indoors and out, be able to stand up to the coastal conditions, and adapt easily to the changeable weather. Louvretec was engaged to deliver that vision, installing their new Slimline Opening Roofs with integrated Bromic Heaters and LED Lighting, as well as a stunning, motorised louvre panel that delivered further privacy and weather control.

The solution

At the heart of the home, two Slimline Opening Roofs connect the space between the kitchen and the pool into a true outdoor room. At the touch of a button, the roofs open for operable shade control, or close when the weather turns. Integrated Heating means the family can linger outside long after the sun goes down, while built-in Lighting keeps the space glowing well into the evening.

A motorised Hi-Span Louvre Panel was added to give the owners control over sun, privacy, and wind, allowing them to fine-tune the outdoor room to the conditions of the day, without ever giving up the connection to the great outdoors, their pool and garden beyond.

The main living room and another beautiful deck look out to the Mangawhai sand dunes. The layout creates a clear sightline through the home and from the pool and outdoor room, the family can look straight through to the dunes, and from the front deck, straight through to the pool and outdoor room beyond.

The Result

The end result is a beautiful coastal home that works exactly as the owners hoped. Grandchildren can splash in the pool while lunch is just steps away under the shelter of the Opening Roofs. The Motorised Louvre Panels adjust as required to soften the afternoon sun and block the wind, and heaters and lights extend the outdoor room well into the evening. Whether the family is gathered around the pool or taking in the dune views from the front deck, the home stays connected, inside to outside, and from one end of the home to the other.

It's a beach house designed for exactly this: generations of family, together, outdoors, whatever the weather.
