Insulation for Home Extension Keeps Over 9,000 Plastic Bottles Out of Landfill

The extension and renovation of this family home in Kohimarama, Auckland, gave the homeowners the chance to not only make room for their rapidly growing children, but to also improve overall thermal performance for a healthier and more comfortable home.

The renovation included the addition of a new bedroom and living area, as well as a full re-roof to bring the new and old sections of the house together. This meant a range of roof, wall and underfloor insulation was required. With the home close to the sea, a moisture-resistant option was important, and the clients were also interested in sustainability. This led them to GreenStuf — a 100% polyester thermal insulation with a minimum of 50% recycled content.

“GreenStuf is sustainable and durable, which was a no-brainer for this family,” explains Alex McGregor, GreenStuf. “We use a minimum of 50% recycled polyester content, so you’re diverting waste from landfill — about 9,000 recycled bottles went into this house. And it’s not affected by moisture, mould or mildew, which means it doesn’t change shape or sink. You get the same high performance for the entire lifetime of the building.”

For the extension, GreenStuf Thermal Ceiling Blanket (formerly Skillion Roof Blanket) was used to provide a high R-value in the tight roof space. The walls were lined with GreenStuf Wall Pads and the underfloor with GreenStuf Underfloor. The installation was undertaken by GreenStuf approved installers, Ewing Insulation. By providing a network of trusted installers, the GreenStuf team is able to ensure high-quality installation and performance across all builds.

The homeowner was also actively involved in the installation of insulation for the roof of the existing building — with GreenStuf chosen to reinforce existing insulation for improved thermal performance. “It was a pleasure to work with,” said the homeowner. “It’s such a stable, non-itch product that was easy to cut and to lay. And any off-cuts are taken back and re-processed, so you’re not left with any waste.”

The GreenStuf team offered support throughout the project — from free H1 calculations and Masterspec support for the design team, through to site sign-off. And once installed, the insulation is backed by a 50-year product durability warranty for added peace of mind.

Having been in their newly renovated home over winter, the clients are thrilled with the performance of the GreenStuf insulation. “Thermally it’s working really well, it keeps the place super warm over winter,” they say. “And we love the fact it uses so much recycled content — that was an important factor for us.”
