FENIX is Now Carbon Neutral

Since 1 December 2021, all FENIX products are carbon neutral. FENIX is an innovative interior design material made in Italy by Arpa Industriale. With low light reflectivity, its surface is extremely opaque, anti-fingerprint and soft to the touch. Becoming carbon neutral is the culmination of Arpa’s sustainability focus over the last 10 years.

Arpa and sustainability: do no harm, do good, do better

Do no harm — by following safety and sustainability regulations and guidelines, Arpa is committed to minimising the environmental impact of its operations and products.

Do good — by having conversations with suppliers on how to improve environmental performance and support customers in sustainability challenges. This leads to creating quality products that have long life spans and limits the need for replacement. FENIX was re-engineered to cut emissions while keeping the same performance by replacing some of the fossil-based phenol with a plant-based lignin — a natural polymer that acts as a glue giving wood its rigidity and strength.

Do better — by always striving to be better in all sustainability areas.

Reaching carbon neutral status

To reach a carbon neutral status, all the carbon emissions released into the environment during the lifecycle of FENIX materials have been quantified. From the extraction and transport of the raw materials, though the production of FENIX and their disposal, everything has been taken into consideration and measured.

FENIX’s carbon footprint was calculated by an independent third party and emissions that could not be removed in the manufacturing improvements have been compensated by funding equivalent carbon dioxide savings elsewhere (offset or carbon credit).

Long-term sustainability strategy

The long-term sustainability strategy consists of two main pillars: the replacement of the most impactful inputs and the improvement of Arpa’s products and processes' efficiency. Also the robustness and reparability of FENIX ensures a long lifespan to all of its products.

Arpa has switched entirely to renewable electricity consisting of Arpa’s plant operating on electricity from either the solar panels installed on the factory’s roof or from the grid (produced from renewable sources).

Despite all of these initiatives, CO2 emissions cannot be completely eliminated. Hard-to-abate emissions generated throughout the whole life cycle of the FENIX products have been balanced out via certified carbon offsets, making FENIX carbon neutral.

Have confidence when specifying FENIX, that it is a quality, carbon neutral product that will always do no harm, do good, do better.
