Wool Underfloor Insulation — Retrofit
Description

Terra Lana's wool floor insulation can be retro-fitted underneath existing floors. Terra Lana Underfloor wool insulation is designed to fill existing underfloor cavities with a durable, semi-rigid, high-performance wool composition that is easy to install. The rigid structure prevents sagging, air movement and heat loss through gaps. The wool component transmits moisture vapour away from the building and maintains its effectiveness in humid or damp conditions.

Terra Lana Underfloor insulation’s rigidity allows it to be friction-fitted from below between joists, and then stapled through the lower edges onto the joists to prevent dislodging. Also suitable for mid-floor installations between levels, where an R-value needs to be achieved (such as above a garage).

Terra Lana insulation is manufactured from New Zealand wool along with thermal bonding technology using polyester to create a robust, structurally stable product that will never slump nor lose its loft over the lifetime of the building. It is BRANZ appraised, and comes with a 50 year warranty to meet the durability requirements of the New Zealand Building Code.

Key Features
  • Moisture control — Terra Lana insulation is hygroscopic (can absorb and release moisture vapour) so it can help to mitigate condensation risks and mould formation within buildings whilst still maintaining thermal performance.
  • Warmth — Wool has a complex natural cellular structure that provides superior warmth in all climates, as it buffers temperature changes. Like wearing wool clothing, it improves the comfort of homes and buildings, requiring less energy to heat or cool them than synthetic insulations
  • Acoustic — Wool has a natural crimp to its structure, which provides excellent acoustic properties. Testing provided by Marshall Day Labs has proven Terra Lana insulation reduces noise transfer through walls, floors, and ceilings of residential and commercial buildings.
  • 50 year warranty — the combination of New Zealand wool and thermal bonding technology using polyester creates a robust, structurally stable product that will never slump nor lose its loft over the lifetime of the building. Meets the durability requirements of the NZBC.
  • Local and recyclable — new wool is sourced from local Canterbury farms, and recycled wool from carpet manufacturers' pre-consumer waste. All Terra Lana offcuts can be returned and recycled in their low-carbon manufacturing plant.
  • Safe — Terra Lana is safe to touch and can be handled without protective clothing, and has negligible VOC emissions
  • Declare Red List Free — certified toxin free

Scope of Use

Terra Lana Underfloor Insulation has been appraised as a thermal insulating material for suspended timber-framed floors and timber-framed mid-floors in new domestic and commercial buildings.

Terra Lana Underfloor Insulation is suitable for use under floors which have an enclosed perimeter foundation as defined in NZS 4246. It is also suitable for use where the subfloor area is not enclosed and is subject to wind, such as in open raised floors and pole houses.

  • Retrofit insulation for existing suspended floors: Terra Lana Underfloor wool insulation is designed to fill existing underfloor cavities
  • Midfloor — installed between floors where an R-value needs to be achieved (such as above a garage).
  • Installed from below
  • The insulation’s rigidity allows it to be friction-fitted between joists and is stapled through the lower edges onto the joists to prevent dislodging
Limitations on Use
  • Must be installed in accordance with the Installation Guide and Terra Lana technical literature
  • Suspended floors, installed from the underside where there is a minimum 350mm clearance between the bearer and ground.
  • For new builds see Drop-In Floor Insulation
  • Must be stored under cover and in dry conditions, and in a way that avoids excessive compression
Statement of Building Code Compliance

In the opinion of BRANZ, Terra Lana Wool Insulation, if designed, used, installed and maintained in accordance with the statements and conditions of Appraisal 1164, will meet or contribute to meeting the following provisions of the NZBC:

  • Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1 (b) not less than 15 years, B2.3.1 (c) 5 years, and
  • B2.3.2. Terra Lana Underfloor Insulation meets these requirements.
  • Clause F2 HAZARDOUS BUILDING MATERIALS: Performance F2.3.1. Terra Lana Underfloor Insulation meets this requirement.
  • Clause H1 ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Performance H1.3.1 (a) and H1.3.2 E. Terra Lana Underfloor Insulation contributes to meeting these requirements.
Other Performance Attributes
  • 50 year warranty — Terra Lana wool insulation comes with a 50 year warranty to meet the durability requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. The combination of New Zealand wool and thermal bonding technology using polyester creates a robust, structurally stable product that will never slump nor lose its loft over the lifetime of the building.
  • Recyclable — As part of Terra Lana's commitment to zero waste, Terra Lana insulation offcuts can be returned to the factory in Christchurch, and are recycled into more insulation.
  • Declare Red List Free — certified toxin free
