Scope of Use

The SmartVent Balance is designed for new build and airtight properties, but is also suitable for renovations.

This solution is ideal for regions with environmental conditions that necessitate closed windows. This includes medium to high background noise areas, or regions with strong odours.

Suitable for:

  • Standalone homes
  • Terraced homes
  • Low rise apartments
  • Retirement homes
  • Student accommodation
  • Up to 3 storey dwellings (design dependent)
  • All New Zealand climate zones
  • Integrating with ducted or high-wall heat pumps
  • Can be installed in either roof cavities or wall mounted
  • Easily expandable via the SmartVent design service

The SmartVent team is also able to provide free custom designs and solutions for domestic dwellings.

Limitations on Use
  • Must be installed in accordance with the installation instructions and recommendations made by SmartVent
  • The efficiency of MVHR systems is affected by the integrity of the building envelope, to increase efficiency in buildings built prior to 2002, we recommend thermal and air-tightening measures are undertaken.
  • Not suitable for larger commercial properties
Statement of Building Code Compliance

The SmartVent Balance is designed to comply with NZ Building code, although correct design and installation is required in order to meet these standards.

The acceptable solutions for G4 (G4/AS1) outlines specific ventilation requirements in homes. If natural activities or environmental conditions produce any of the types of air pollution outlined in NZBC G4 3.3 , mechanical ventilation is required.

Additionally; as per table 2 in NZS4303:1990, private dwellings require 0.35 air changes per hour, but no less than 7.5 L/s per person.

For extraction ventilation, table 2 in NZS4303:1990 requires at least 50L/s intermittently or 25L/s continuously for kitchens, 25L/s intermittently or 10L/s continuously for bathrooms and toilets, and 20L/s intermittently for laundries.

In a typical installation, SmartVent Balance is designed to meet these standards.

SmartVent Balance also meets the NZ healthy homes ventilation standards.

In-Service History

The SmartVent Balance is a European designed and manufactured product by Vent-Axia, who have over 80 years of experience in the ventilation industry. After years of refinement in the airtight European market, the Balance was brought to New Zealand in 2018, and has been operating flawlessly since.

The SmartVent Balance has been installed in several developments, such as the Vivid Living retirement home in Red beach, and the Waitata Shores apartments in Takanini.

Other Performance Attributes
  • System filters: All SmartVent systems are supplied with an F7 filter, which is capable of capturing up to 90% of 0.4 micron particles such as fine pollens, dusts and other allergens from the air. High quality HEPA filters are also available, which can capture particles 0.04 microns in size, an ideal solution for asthma and allergy sufferers. For environments with strong odours carbon filters can be fitted.
  • System controls: The SmartVent Balance is designed to operate autonomously based on its internal sensors. However, if manual operation is required, it features an LCD with automatic backlight which turns off to minimise power consumption.
  • Quiet operation: Acoustically insulated ducting present in the SmartVent balance keeps the noise generated by the system to 39dB(A).
  • NZGBC Homestar V5 compliance: As a balanced MVHR system, SmartVent Balance can provide four points and is suitable for Homestar 9-10 properties.

Warranty

All SmartVent systems feature a 5 year warranty.

Note that the product must be operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions contained in the operating & installation instructions provided with the product. The warranty on the entire system is void if non-genuine SmartVent parts (including but not limited to; controller, filter, duct, fan(s) and grilles) are used as this may affect performance.

Filters should be changed every 6-18 months, depending on usage and environmental conditions.
