Rusticated Shiplap weatherboards are used:

• as an external cladding system on buildings;
  • within the scope of paragraph 1.1 of E2/AS1.
  • less than 10m in building height.
  • with a risk score of less than or equal to 20 when evaluated against the E2/AS1 risk matrix.
• on timber or lightweight steel-framing.

Location;

• In wind zones up to and including extra high as defined in NZS 3604:2011 or to a design wind pressure (ULS) of 2.1 kPa
• In all exposure zones as defined in NZS 3604:2011.
• At least 1m from a relevant or notional boundary.

• Must be designed, installed, and maintained in accordance with LMA technical literature.
• The cladding must be installed;
  • over a drained and ventilated cavity.
  • in conjunction with a flexible building wrap or rigid underlay in accordance with Clauses 9.1.5 to 9.1.7 of E2/AS1 that meets the requirements of Table 23 or is a proprietary product with a current Product Certificate.
  • With joinery that meets the requirements of NZS 4211.
• A thermal break must be installed if the framing is lightweight steel.
• Use in microclimatic conditions, as defined in NZS 3604:2011, is excluded.
• Fixings must be Würth ASSY®plus A2 decking screw or in accordance with Table 24 of E2/AS1.
• Clad Lap joints and ends must be sealed with oil before installation.

If designed, installed and maintained in accordance with all LMA Timber requirements, the Hardwood Rusticated Shiplap Weatherboard system will comply with or contribute to compliance with the following performance claims:

• B1 STRUCTURE B1.3.1, B1.3.2, B1.3.3 (a, e, f, h, j, m, q, and in respect of UV radiation), B1.3.4 (a, b, c, d) — Alternative Solution
• B2 DURABILITY B2.3.1(b) — B2/VM1
• E2 EXTERNAL MOISTURE E2.3.2, E2.3.3, E2.3.5, E2.3.7 (a, b, c) — Alternative Solution
• F2 HAZARDOUS BUILDING MATERIALS F2.3.1

Building consents have been issued all over New Zealand for the hardwood cladding as an alternative cladding solution. Building consents have been issued in by Auckland Council, Kapiti Coast District Council, Christchurch Council, Waimakariri Council, and Selwyn Council, where the hardwood has been used as a primary cladding as an alternative build solution meeting E2/AS1 requirements as documented. 

BRANZ appraisal is currently being pursued.

• Australian hardwood timbers are classified as Class 1 (40 year plus) natural durability under AS 5604-2005.

Sustainably Sourced or Reclaimed Hardwood

Sustainable timber is sourced from responsibly managed forests, where harvesting is done in a manner that ensures ongoing replenishment without causing harm to the surrounding environment, including native flora and fauna. LMA Timber do not source from tropical rainforests such as those in Indonesia and the Amazon.

The primary source of reclaimed hardwood is Kennedys Timbers in Australia, sourced from a diverse range of structures such as wharfs, bridges, jetties, warehousing, and power poles. The availability of this material is substantial, with over 200,000 power poles becoming reclaimable each year. LMA Timber has exclusive rights for New Zealand to Kennedys Timbers, the largest recycler of hardwood timber in Australia.

Carbon Sequestration

Not only is hardwood more durable but is also far superior when it comes to carbon sequestration compared to most other timber options
available in New Zealand. Depending on the species chosen the amount of carbon may be triple the amount when compared with a cedar cladding
