Dramatic Black Stained Timber Leaves a Lasting Impression at a Luxury Getaway

Slow Beam is a unique property, nestled in the West Hobart hills in Tasmania, overlooking the Derwent River and rooftops of central Hobart. The building consists of two linked timber clad pavilions, with dark stained interiors and exteriors that create a striking presence. The shared vision of the client and architect brought about stunning results, with Porter’s Paints Palm Beach Black used for stained ply interiors, drawing the eye outward as carefully selected views are framed by the windows.

"We wanted a moody and dramatic interior, which we were able to execute through Sarah Trotter of Hearth Studio's idea to do plywood panelling with a black stain," says Lauren Bamford, owner and creative director of Slow Beam.

"We had looked at some stains the builder sourced, but we weren't satisfied with them,” explains Lauren. “I decided to visit the Porter's store on Gertrude Street, Fitzroy in Melbourne. I was sent home with a sample of Palm Beach Black, which we tested on some ply, and on the ash cladding for the exterior. It was exactly what we had been looking for."

Porter’s Paints Palm Beach Black is a water-based, colourfast black stain that is suitable for most timber types. Made with UV resistant pigments, it can be used for interior and exterior applications, making it a versatile option for architects looking to add a touch of drama and sophistication to their projects.

For Slow Beam, Palm Beach Black provided the perfect staining solution, helping to achieve continuity between the exterior and interior — both painted exclusively with Palm Beach Black — for a seamless look from the outside in.

Purpose built as luxury accommodation; this property is set to leave a lasting impression on the many lucky guests fortunate enough to enjoy a stay at Slow Beam. "We are thrilled with the results throughout the house," says Lauren.

  2. Aesthetic appeal: The sophisticated and dramatic charcoal black finish for interiors and exteriors is sure to impress and create an impact.

  3. UV resistance: Palm Beach Black is made with UV-resistant pigments, ensuring that the colour remains vibrant and does not fade over time. This makes it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor applications.

  4. Easy application: The ease of application makes it a convenient option for both professional and DIY projects.

  5. Cost-effective coverage: Palm Beach Black offers excellent coverage, with approximately 20m² per litre. This means that you can achieve a beautiful finish with less product, making it cost-effective. It can be applied as either a transparent wash effect or an opaque finish.
