NEW
Plymasters Flameshield Poplar plywood was specified for the Francis Douglas Memorial College gymnasium redevelopment in New Plymouth, designed by Boon Architects and constructed by Clelands Construction.
The project required a wall and ceiling lining solution capable of achieving a Group 1S fire rating, while also supporting acoustic performance and delivering a consistent architectural finish across a large, high-occupancy space.
Intrinsic fire performance
Flameshield Poplar is engineered with intrinsic fire-retardant properties, allowing it to achieve Group 1S classification without reliance on applied surface coatings.
This provides greater certainty of performance, as the fire-retardant treatment is embedded throughout the panel and remains effective after cutting, sanding, machining, and perforation.
Application and installation
The plywood was installed extensively across both wall and ceiling linings, creating a continuous and cohesive material finish throughout the interior.
The ability to machine and perforate the panels without compromising fire performance enabled integration of acoustic ceiling elements, improving sound control within a space designed to accommodate over 900 occupants.
Coating compatibility and compliance
A Resene Aquaclear water-based polyurethane (three-coat system) was applied to enhance durability and maintain the natural timber appearance.
In accordance with the Building Product Specifications (BPS) Table 8.5.2.1, waterborne or solventborne coatings up to 0.4mm thickness do not alter the fire performance of wood-based substrates.
With a total film build of approximately 100 microns, the applied finish remains well within this limit, ensuring the substrate’s Group 1S classification is retained without the need for additional fire testing or certification.
Suitability for education environments
Flameshield Poplar provides Group 1S fire performance, machinability for custom applications including acoustic perforation, lightweight handling and installation benefits, and a consistent natural timber finish suitable for large-format linings.
Specification considerations
Flameshield Poplar is suitable for interior wall and ceiling linings where fire performance is required, particularly in education facilities, assembly spaces, and commercial interiors.
