New BRANZ Certification for Trade Essentials Strandsarking

Manufactured in New Zealand using the same zero formaldehyde resin and FSC sourced fibre as the already popular Strandfloor H3.1, Strandsarking is a cost-effective alternative to other roofing substrates, with the added benefit of a 3600 x 800mm sheet size for ease of handling. Suitable for use with roofing materials weighing up to 150kg/m², Strandsarking is 16.3mm thick and has a textured surface to provide a more slip resistant surface than available with smooth sanded panels.

Strandsarking is a more environmentally friendly option than alternatives such as plywood; using a pMDI resin (formaldehyde free resin) system plus heat and pressure, wood strands are bonded together to form high density panels. Strandsarking has a water based insecticide and fungicide added to provide superior performance when exposed to moisture. A wax emulsion is added to the resin during the process to give additional moisture resistance throughout the panel. This means that there is no untreated core, nor the risk of exposure that is present with other products which use a CCA treatment after pressing, leaving an untreated core that can be exposed if cuts or holes are made in the product.

In the opinion of BRANZ, Strandsarking — if designed, used, installed and maintained in accordance with the statements and conditions of Appraisal No. 891 (2015) — will meet the following provisions of the NZBC:

  • B1.3.1, B1.3.2 and B1.3.4 Structure
  • B2.3.1 Durability
  • F2.3.1 Hazardous Building Materials

The new BRANZ Appraisal No. 946 (2016) will meet the above provisions of the NZBC along with:

  • E.2.3.2 External Moisture

Strandsarking is now available from building merchants across New Zealand. For more detailed information regarding installation and design guidelines, please refer to the Strandsarking Technical Brochure.
