With the launch of version six of Clause H1 in the New Zealand Building Code, Knauf Insulation is here to support you in achieving cost-effective compliance, with their free, online H1 Calculator upgraded to enable calculations for both version 5 and version 6 regulations!
As designers look to transition away from the Schedule Method, required by November 2026, the calculator will continue to support those working to the existing standards, while simultaneously allowing those who have already made the move to version 6 to continue using the intuitive platform.
Through the H1 Calculator, specifiers can calculate H1 compliance in just three easy steps.
- Enter your project details
- Enter your proposed construction R-values for each building element
- Get a free, tailored calculation and report for your project
This allows for modelling and trialing of different designs, materials, and sizes to optimise the design and minimise the costs, helping to achieve compliance with confidence.
Following the Schedule Method’s removal, the Calculation Method now exists as the simplest method for demonstrating cost-effective H1 compliance in version 6. The method works by calculating the overall heat loss of a ‘reference building’ based on the specified R-values, which may be higher or lower than those set out in H1/AS1. Because compliance is based on the overall thermal performance of the home, this allows increased flexibility for specifiers, who can choose to offset higher R-values in some building elements for lower R-values in other, more expensive elements to achieve the same level of compliance.
This allows specifiers to take advantage of high-thermal performing insulation materials, like Knauf Insulation’s single-layer R7.0 and R8.0 Ceiling batt, to achieve a higher material R-value than required in the ceiling, while choosing a lower R-value for window glazing to save on material costs and allow more natural light into the design.
The entire range of Knauf Insulation’s glasswool solutions for ceilings, skillion roofs, walls, and underfloor are designed to optimise thermal performance, comply with H1 requirements, and support the construction of better buildings across New Zealand. With a team of technical experts available to discuss your H1 project details and address any questions or queries you may have, Knauf's online H1 hub — featuring Knauf's H1 calculator — is your one stop shop for achieving compliance without the headache.
